Specific Objectives • Define value and principle • Discuss origin of values and principles • Identify personal, family, religious and cultural values and their importance in provision of ASRH services • Explain how personal values can affect one’s behavior • Discuss influence of values and principles in decision making

  4. Definitions • Value: The word “value” has several meanings. 1. One is the actual worth of an object or an item, in monetary terms. 2. Personal measure of worth, such as how important certain beliefs, principles or ideas are to someone. • Principle:Principle is a faculty of the mind

  5. Source of values and principles • Family • Friends and peers • Culture • Religious teachings • Media • Education (school) • Professions • Social environment • Life experiences • Political influence • Economic status

Summary of relationship between values and behavior • People tell others about the values that are important to them. • People behave according to their values • People make decisions based on their values. • People stand up for their values. • People feel guilty if they do not behave according to their values

Contd… • Different things are worth more or less to different people, meaning they have more or less value to different people • The things, ideas, beliefs and principles that are of worth to us shape our values. • Our value help to define, who we are and help determine the choices we make, also called our behaviour.
