  9. VY_32_INOVACE_1.1.AJ3,4.15/Žž Flowersymbols According to thelegend St. Patrick used it as a metaphor for the Christian Trinitywhen Christianising Ireland in the 5th century. His followers adopted the custom of wearing a shamrock on his feast day. There are many explanations of how the leek came to be adopted as the national emblem of Wales. One is that St. David advised the Welsh, on the eve of battle with the Saxons, to wear leeks in their caps to distinguish friend from foe. As Shakespeare records in Henry V, the Welsh archers wore leeks at the battle of Agincourt in 1415. He is also a fictional character whom is supposed to personify Englishness and certain Englih virtues. In the first and third quarter of the shield - the three passant guardant lions of England; in the second - the rampant lion and double tressure flory-counterflory of Scotland; and in the third, a harp for Ireland. The dexter supporter is a crowned English lion; the sinister, a Scottish unicorn. According to legend a free unicorn was considered a very dangerous beast; therefore the heraldic unicorn is chained. In the greenery below, a thistle, Tudor Rose and shamrock are present, representing Scotland, England and Ireland .The coat features both the motto of English monarchs, Dieu et mondroit (God and my right), and the motto of the Order of the Garter, Honi soit qui mal y pense (shame upon him who thinks evil of it) on a representation of the Garter behind the shield. 17. VY_32_INOVACE_1.1.AJ3,4.15/Žž The Battle of Hastings was fought on 14 October 1066 between the Norman-French army of Duke William II of Normandy and an English army under the Anglo-Saxon King Harold II, during the Norman conquest of England. It took place approximately 7 miles (11 kilometres) north-west of Hastings, close to the present-day town of Battle, East Sussex, and was a decisive Norman victory. It was the last sucessful conquest to Britain and tha year 1066 is hence the most important date in Britishb history. The battle was depicted on well known Bayoux Tapestry - an embroidered cloth nearly 70 metres (230 ft) long, now exhibited at Musée de la Tapisserie de Bayeux in Bayeux, Normandy, France. 18. VY_32_INOVACE_1.1.AJ3,4.15/Žž Snowdonia is a region in north Wales and a national park of 823 square miles (2,130 km2) in area. It was the oldest of the three National Parks in Wales, in 1951. It is a popular destination of hikers. Many of the hikers in the area concentrate on Snowdon – the highest mountain of the area and the whole Wales. It is regarded as a fine mountain, but can become quite crowded, particularly with the Snowdon Mountain Railway running to the summit. Snowdonia is one of the wettest parts of the British Isles. 19. VY_32_INOVACE_1.1.AJ3,4.15/Žž The Loch Ness Monster is a mysterious creature that inhabits Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. Popular interest and belief in the animal's existence has varied since it was first brought to the world's attention in 1933. Evidence of its existence is anecdotal, with minimal and much-disputed photographic material and sonar readings. The most common speculation among believers is that the creature represents a line of long-surviving plesiosaurs. The scientific community regards the Loch Ness Monster as a modern-day myth, and explains sightings as including misidentifications of more mundane objects, outright hoaxes, and wishful thinking.Despite this, it remains one of the most famous examples of cryptozoology. The legendary monster has been affectionately referred to by the nickname Nessie. Autorem materiálu a všech jeho částí, není-li uvedeno jinak, je RNDr. Pavlína Kochová CZ.1.07/1.5.00/34.0501

  20. VY_32_INOVACE_1.1.AJ3,4.15/Žž • The Giant's Causeway is an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic eruption. • It is located in County Antrim on the northeast coast of Northern Ireland. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986, and a National Nature Reserve in 1987. Thetops of the columns form stepping stones that lead from the cliff foot and disappear under the sea. Most of the columns are hexagonal, although there are also some with four, five, seven or eight sides. The tallest are about 12 metres (39 ft) high, and the solidified lava in the cliffs is 28 metres (92 ft) thick in places. • The Giant's Causeway is today owned and managed by the National Trust and it is the most popular tourist attraction in Northern Ireland.[4] Autorem materiálu a všech jeho částí, není-li uvedeno jinak, je RNDr. Pavlína Kochová CZ.1.07/1.5.00/34.0501
