Before & After School programming Before & After-school programs provide enrichment and development opportunities for kids and young adults beyond the traditional school curriculum. Programs taking place before & after school hours give youth a safe, supervised place to explore interests, learn new skills and spend worthwhile time with peers and adults.

What are the fees? Is there a daily Fee Offered? • Shawnee County-$2 daily rate; 2012 - $4/day • Johnson County-$105.00 weekly rate • Harrisonville- $60 per three week sessions • City of Lawrence-based on a sliding scale $20 per week • Lees Summit- $75 per week
Do you offer the program on days that the school district is closed? • Shawnee County-offers a separate program due to licensing • Johnson County-offers a full day program • Harrisonville- offers the program for full days and half days • City of Lawrence-offers the program and at no extra charge • Lees Summit- coincides with the district calendar
Do you offer before school programming? • Shawnee County-Yes • Johnson County-Yes (not offered at all locations) • Harrisonville- Yes ($50 per 3 week session charge) • City of Lawrence-Yes • Lees Summit- Yes for half day kindergarten
What is your timeline for the program (hours of operation and duration (entire school year) • Shawnee County-7am-8:30am / 3:30-5:30pm (would like to change to 6pm for next year) • Johnson County-7am-8:20am / 3:20pm-6pm • Harrisonville- 6:30am-8:00am / After School until 6:00pm • City of Lawrence-7am-until school begins / After School until 5pm or 7:30pm in some locations • Lees Summit- 6:30am-until school begins / After School until 6pm
Is there a sibling discount? • Shawnee County-No • Johnson County-Yes • Harrisonville- No (they have a discount for both before and after school) • City of Lawrence-No • Lees Summit- No
Do you use school district Facilities or another location to offer Before & after school programs? • Shawnee County-Utilize their own locations • Johnson County-Utilize school district property ($5 per hour per room) • Harrisonville- Utilize their own locations • City of Lawrence-Utilize district locations as well as boys and girls club sites (No fee) • Lees Summit- Utilize their own locations

Do you provide transportation via bus service for Your program? If so, do you utilize a school district bus transportation service, and if so, are you charged to utilize this? If not, do you enforce a late pick-up fee, and what is that amount? • Shawnee County-School is so close that they (staff) walk the kids over and pick them up by van if weather is bad. Older kids are bused there by school at no charge, and parents have to pick-up • Johnson County-Do not transport • Harrisonville-Utilize school district transportation. There is no charge because they have been declared as a “safe pick-up/drop-off” location. They charge a $5 per five minutes for the late pick-up fee. • City of Lawrence-Have their own buses • Lees Summit- Coordinated with the school district for their buses and a late pick up fee was added ($1 per minute after 6pm)

Do you accept SRS and other federal or state aid payments? What TYPES of payment? Can you estimate the amount of time a staff person works on managing payments for an after school program? • Shawnee County-Yes • Johnson County-Yes • Harrisonville- No • City of Lawrence-No • Lees Summit- No • SRS may pay for services for eligible children when SRS funding is available. The school district/recreation center will be required by SRS to enroll in the SRS Child Care Subsidy Program.
What is your instructor to student desired ratio? • Shawnee County - 1 to 15 • Johnson County - 1 to 12 • Harrisonville- 1 to 10 • City of Lawrence- 1 to 15 • Lees Summit- 1 to 10
Do you place a maximum number of children allowed per site that the program is offered at? • Shawnee County – Yes, they have a student max of 50 during school and 60 during the summer per local building code. • Johnson County – Yes, their maximums are determined by square footage (KDHE Guidelines). • Harrisonville- No,as long as they are following the fire code guidelines. • City of Lawrence- Yes, they determine it by how much they can afford to spend at each location. They will not run a site for less than 130 kids a day. • Lees Summit- Yes, depending on location and space available.
Do you coordinate the program with YOUR LOCAL school district to offer an educational component in the program? • Shawnee County – No • Johnson County – No • Harrisonville- No • City of Lawrence- Yes • Lees Summit- No • Programs that can be utilized: • Success Makers • Kids Activities • Adventures of Cyberbee
What are disqualifiers for entry into the Before & after school care program? • Shawnee County – They follow the schools discipline policy. If a student gets 3 write-ups they can be suspended for 3 days. They will also expel a participant for hitting or abusing other children and or staff. • Johnson County –Children must be able to function within a 1 to 12 staff to participant ratio. Ongoing enrollment for any child is reviewed on a case-by-case basis. • Harrisonville- Participants must maintain good behavior to be eligible to participate. • City of Lawrence- Based on school disciplinary issues or juvenile offenses. • Lees Summit- Participants must abide by their code of conduct policy and maintain good standing.
What is your pay scale for employees that run the program? • Shawnee County – $8-$9 per hour, they utilize college students to run the programs. • Johnson County – $15.40 per hour (Program Director), $8.75 per hour (Lead Staff Member), $7.25 per hour (Assistant), each receives a .25 per hour annual increase. • Harrisonville- Instructors are paid as a “recreation program instructor.”Part-time staff are paid minimum wage unless they have worked for them previously, then they receive an annual increase. • City of Lawrence- $8-$10 per hour (part-time) / Salaried DOQ (Full-Time) • Lees Summit- $10 per hour
