  2. When numbers are repeatedly multiplied together, we use exponent to illustrate this process. 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 = 35 power, index, or exponent base

  4. Negative Bases A negative base raised to an odd exponent is negative. A negative base raised to an even exponent is positive.

  7. To multiply numbers with the same base, keep the base and add the exponents. To divide numbers with the same base, keep the base and subtract the exponents. When raising a power to a power, keep the base and multiply the exponents. The power of a product is the product of the powers. The power of a quotient is the quotient of the powers. Any non-zero number raised to the power of zero is 1. and in particular

  28. Exponential equation An exponential equation is an equation in which the unknown occurs as part of the index or exponent. For example: 2x = 8 and 30 x 3x = 7

  40. Growth and Decay 20. Exponential functions are often used to model growth and decay. Populations of animals, people, and bacteria usually growin an exponential way. Radioactive substances, and items that depreciate in value, usually decayexponentially.
