My Average Zuni Day By: Aidan Weston
My tribe & region My name is Tocho meaning mountain lion. I am part of the Zuni tribe. My family and I live in New Mexico. This is my story …
Journal Entry #1: Summer Housing “Hey, Mother? Can we live in a cliff like the big kids instead of the canyon we have?” Don’t get me wrong, I love my sandstone and adobe house, but I think it would be more fun to live in a cliff. “Not until fall, I’m afraid.” my mother said. Oh well. At least I get to go into MY home by climbing a ladder onto the roof and then dropping in! CLUNK, it would go. ideum.com A wall to a Zuni house.
Journal Entry #1: Winter Clothing The dance is tonight(hum hum) and we get to wear horned hats (hum hum) and necklaces and semi-colorful shirts! I love our buffalo skin that is thermal(it can keep the heat in) and in summer it can keep the cold in. nativestars.com Zuni dancing clothes.
Journal Entry #1: Spring Food MMM! I smell corn and squash! Something great like squirrel or gopher would go well with the veggies…ooh! Maybe rabbit! Not a chance of boar, bear, sheep, beaver, or mice this early in the spring, maybe deer…oh well! An ear of corn. special.equisearch.com
Journal Entry #1:Summer Charactistics “Hey, Mom? Can I go deliver WaterClan their daily squirrels?” I asked my mom. “Okay, but be back before sun-high.” she replied. As I rushed to WaterClan with their squirrels, I estimated I had 15 minutes before sun-high. I’ll have Just enough time. It takes 10 minutes round-trip between Clans, and 5 to deliver. I thought. Tomorrow Dad will have to deliver to DeerClan, SunClan, and *snicker* CornClan. My Clan is EagleClan, and I’ll stay loyal to it. users.frii.com EagleClan pottery.
Journal Entry #2: Summer Where we live As I and the hunters returned from the plains with lots of juicy animals, I said, “I wonder sometimes if we are standing on land that in the future will be called something crazy, like ‘The Great Plains’ or ‘New Mexico’. That would be odd.” The Great Plains southernstudies.org
Journal Entry #2:Summer Animals and Plants *sniff* MMM! “I smell deer, antelope, squirrel, bunny, boar, bear, sheep, beavers, and mice. We should move to the forest. It has most of the animals we need, and trees like aspens, cottonwoods, douglas firs, junipers, pinons, spruces, ponderosa pines, and scrub oaks. Then again, stuff like locoweed is poisonous to the touch.” I rubbed my yucca(a special type of flower) necklace. A bear from New Mexico. netstate.com
Journal Entry #3: Winter Whether “It is way too” *chatter* “cold to give any type of “*chatter* food to the other Clans, Mom. Do it yourself.” I said angrily to my mom. “Fine.” my mom replied. Sheesh. The hole in our roof was letting all the cold in. “WHY!?... Is it so cold?” I yelled to the open sky. In summer, it was so much warmer. It rains roughly 1/7 of the year. It’s sunny about 5/7 of the year. The other 1/7 is snow. Why can’t it be sunny ALL the time? *whimper* A snowy field skimaven.com
Journal Entry #3: Winter A place to be safe As I troughed through the snow to my warm house, I thought. Why do our houses have holes instead of doors? That reminds me, I have not told my mom about my invention… trapdoors! We could have the luxury of going in our house the normal way, but keep out the cold! A trapdoor shutterstock.com
Journal Entry #3: Winter Natural disaster *WOOSH* A blizzard?! One of those hadn't happened since… 10 years ago, when I was 5. To the underground! I ran to my house, crawled trough the newly-installed trapdoor, ran to the hole, and jumped. The rest of my family was already huddled in the room with rabbit, water, and a little bear to last about a day, and a lot of cloth to knit. Hopefully all goes well… Aguy in a blizzard. weatherquestions.com
Journal Entry #3:Winter How long it lasts “Just one day. In one day you won’t go crazy,” I whispered to myself. The blizzard will go away in another ¼ of a day. Knitting is so boring. A rock is more entertaining. At least we’re safe. No blizzard can get in here. I drift off. “Get up to check the blizzard. You’re the oldest,” my mom said. “Fine.” I said groggily. I peeked outside and… I sneaked out to play in the peace of the fresh snow. An underground room. xnickixstockx.deviantart.com
Reflection 75 years later… “I’m nearly dead. I’ve aged, guys. I’m sorry I have to die. But be strong, safe, and have a good sense of humor. Good-bye." I said sadly to my sons. As I said these words, memories came flooding in. Our homes, the dresses, the corn, the pottery, the ‘Great Plains’, food, and the blizzard. My life on earth is done. I’m dead.
Reflection I think I did better than average overall, though I could improve here and there. I think I deserve an A- or a B+. Some slides are a little short, some are a little long. Improper grammar is another problem. I think I did good.
