The First Book • The first book ever printed in the new world was the Bay Psalm Book. It was written by three authors one of which was Richard Mather.
Increase Mather • The son of Richard Mather was also and author who wrote more than 130 books. One of his books was written about the Salem which trials. It was called Cases of Conscience Concerning Evil Spirits.
Cotton Mather • Cotton was Increases oldest son and he published more than 400 books in his life time. Far exceeding his father. Like his father though he also wrote about the Salem witch trials.
The Puritan Style • Puritans thought that a plain style of writing was best. The thought that having a clear statement was what mattered most. They wrote like this because they did not want to seem vain in having an ornate writing style.
Pre 1750 • Even though great writers would emerge in the south, before 1750 one a select few were notable authors. Mostly it seems that the Mather family knew what people wanted and that is what made them so famous for their writing.
