We live in a drug oriented society!! • Headache? Take a painkiller • Stomach ache? Antacids • Tired? Grab a coffee • Want to relax? Grab a beer • Pharmaceutical companies, $25 billion • Alcohol industry, $20 billion SPENT EVERY YEAR ON ADVERTISING!
Healthier options • Relaxation techniques (chapter 9) • Exercise • Maintain physical, mental, emotional, & social health
What is a drug? A substance that causes a physical or emotional change in a person.
Types of Drugs Prescription: Natural Remedy: • written order for a specific medicine • Antibiotics, sleep aids, anti-anxiety • substances that occur in nature • Echinacea, ginkgo biloba, other herbal remedies
Types of Drugs Over the counter: Tobacco: • legally bought without prescription • Tylenol, Motrin, Nyquil • contain nicotine • Cigarettes, cigars, chew
Types of Drugs Alcohol Illegal Drugs • Any substance that contains the drug alcohol • Beer, wine, liquor • Substances that cannot be legally sold, purchased or used. • Marijuana, heroin, cocaine
Types of Drugs Unrecognized Drugs: • Found in products that are not usually classifies as drugs • Caffeine, inhalants
Use/misuse/abuse Drug Use: taking a medicine properly and in its correct dosage. Drug Misuse: improper use of a drug (not taking prescribed drugs as directed) Drug Abuse: intentional improper use of a drug (legal drug not as prescribed/illegal drug for any reason)
Why do people use/abuse drugs? • Psychoactive effect: an effect on a persons mood or behavior • Addiction: a condition in which a person relies on a drug to help function.
Why do people abuse drugs? People abuse drugs because they want to change something about their lives. Here are some of the reasons young people have given for abusing drugs: • To fit in • To escape or relax • To relieve boredom • To seem grown up • To rebel • To experiment

Journal 1: • Make a list of OTC & prescription drugs you are familiar with. Write down what each drug is used for.
Medicine does 1 of Medicine: 4 things: A substance used to treat an ailment or illness. • Battle bacteria or organisms that cause disease. • Protect the body from disease. • Influence the circulatory system. • Affect the nervous system.
Over The counter drugs (OTC) • Analgesic: a medicine that relieves pain. • Examples: aspirin, acetaminophen, and ibuprofen • Sedatives: drugs that slow body functioning and make you sleepy. • Example: sleeping pills • Stimulants: a drug that speeds up body functioning. • Most common ingredient is caffeine. • Examples: headache remedies, cold remedies, and appetite suppressants.
Prescription Drugs • Dose: the exact amount of a drug. • It is important to following the directions for prescription drugs and take only the recommended dose. • The only person that should be taking the prescription drug is the person whose name appears on the bottle label.
Drug Interactions • Side Effect: an effect that accompanies the expected. • Common side effects include drowsiness, nausea, dizziness, and headaches. • Drug Allergy: an unwanted effect that accompanies the desired effect of a drug. • Symptoms include rash, runny nose, and a quickened heart rate and breathing. • DO NOT IGNORE THESE SYMPTOMS!!
