  1. WORKS Work,Organisation and Restructuringin aKnowledge-BasedSociety – the theoretical pillar

  2. Literature review (Goal 1, Workpackage 3 – 9 state-of-the-art reports to be produced by month 7) Thematic reports (Goal 7 – 11 thematic reports to be produced in year 3) WORKS: Theoretical pillar – two stages

  3. Ambitious aims To cover a large field of literature at an international level in a way that Is interdisciplinary Covers all main European research traditions Addresses specific research questions to develop coherent conceptual frameworks and formulate hypotheses to be addressed in WORKS qualitative and quantitative research To produce nine theme-based state-of-the-art reports by Month 7 (December 2005!) WORKS: literature review

  4. To combine a thematic approach with international comprehensiveness To remain focused on our key research questions whilst retaining interdisciplinary breadth To obtain conceptual clarity To demonstrate that we are conforming with the very ambitious description of work whilst keeping the work ‘doable’ and enjoyable To maximise our collective resources efficiently within a very tight time-frame WORKS:The challenges

  5. Decide to privilege thematic responsibilities over language-group/regional ones Try to develop as many synergies as possible between responsibilities for thematic state-of-the-art reports in the literature survey and responsibilities for thematic reports Focus on research questions Avoid being overambitious. Conceptual clarity is more important than comprehensiveness Use language/regional expertise as secondary check – to fill gaps in thematic reports rather than as a primary activity Importance of clear definition of concepts – glossary WORKS: Proposal – general principles

  6. Proposed division of labour for WP3 by theme * Already fixed

  7. Everyone contributes short descriptions of the ‘key concepts’ that they regard as important in the relevant national literature. These will be edited and placed on the website in the form of glossary entries for all partners to refer to when writing their first thematic reports After the production of first draft thematic reports, everyone reads through them to check for significant ‘gaps’ in relation to their national research/language groups. Additional checks as in next slide WORKS: Proposal for ensuring international representativeness

  8. Proposed division of labour for WP3 – international checking

  9. Proposed timetable for WP3

  10. 1. the knowledge society “To what extent do theories on the knowledge-based society help explain changes in work organisation?” 2. globalisation and the elaboration of value chains “To what extent can the reorganisation of work be explained by the global restructuring of value chains, entailing a simultaneous decomposition and recomposition of sectors, organisations, labour processes and skills?” 3. Changes at work, public policy and social dialogue “What is the interaction between the changing division of labour and restructuring of work roles of global pressures on the one hand and different national regulatory contexts or practices on the other?” and “How do public policies and industrial relation systems influence changes in work organisation in particular regional contexts and, conversely, how do the dynamics of restructuring impact on social dialogue and policymaking?” Research questions (a)

  11. 4. new forms of work organisation and flexibility strategies of the organisation “What are the directions of a changing division of labour and forms of co-operation for different occupational groups?” and “How are the simultaneous trends of flexibilisation and standardisation played out?” 5. new career trajectoriesand occupational identities “How do company strategies and labour market regulation impact on career trajectories, time use and occupational identities?” 6. the use of knowledge and communication “How do new forms of work organisation impact on the opportunities for the acquisition, mobilisation and utilisation not only of explicit, but also of implicit knowledge?” Research questions (b)

  12. 7. employment change and the demand for skills and labour market restructuring “What is the interplay between skills demand and qualification levels taking account of national differences in the processes governing the relationship between education and the labour market?” 8. the gender and ethnic dimensions “How do changes in work organisations impact on patterns of gender segregation and how gender contracts influence changes in work organisations?” 9. quality of life “In what ways do changes in working time structures impact on the quality of life?” and “How do new working patterns of different occupational groups affect the quality of life in the short and the long term taking into accountnational institutional contexts?” Research questions (c)

  13. Division of labour on thematic reports *changed by mutual agreement
