New Sweden • 1638: Swedish people settled in SW NJ along DE Rv. (called New Sweden) • also traded with Lenape to get furs—made Dutch mad • 1655: New Sweden lasted for 17 yr. until Dutch took over • Most Swedish colonists stayed • 1660: Dutch also settled in village called Bergen
The English • England wanted control of Atlantic Coast (including New Netherland) • King Charles II gave brother James, Duke of York, land between CT/DE rivers • 1664: Duke of York sent 4 warships to take over New Netherlands • Dutch surrendered • “New Jersey”—name given to land between Hudson & DE Rv.
Settlements • Dutch life changed little under English: • same rights • kept language, religion, culture • Dutch adopted Eng. ways, learned Eng., married into Eng. families • Eng. encouraged others to move to NJ • Lenape migration (moved West to Canada, Wisconsin, Oklahoma) • Eng. took over Lenape land • Brought deadly diseases to Lenape people
