  2. Just the Beginning • Miles College was founded in 1898 by the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church (Now the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, also known as the C.M.E. Church) • The college was named after Bishop William H. Miles • The college is still supported by and affiliated with the CME church • Originally located in Thomasville • Moved to Fairfield, AL in the Spring of 1907

  3. Bishop William H. Miles Born a Slave in 1828 CME Church licensed him to preach in 1857 Elected Bishop in 1870 Saw the church as a source of spiritual solace for freed slaves Was a central figure in the CME church until his death in 1892. Miles College is named in his honor.

  6. A First . . . • Williams Hall became the first college building completed on the campus in 1907 • Williams Hall was named after Bishop R.R. Williams, the presiding CME bishop in Alabama • It has served as the administration building, the women’s dormitory and the home of the economics classes. • Williams Hall is currently closed and awaiting renovations

  7. The First Miles College Graduate Mrs. Willie Selden McDaniel Graduate in May 1918 Received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education

Facts about Miles College • Is a member of the HBCU Community • Was formally know as Miles Memorial College • 2011 SIAC Champions in Football • Criminal Justice is the most declared major • Is a Liberal Arts College • Has about 1500 students • 6 miles from downtown • 97% of Social Work Graduates attend Graduate School • Only HBCU that houses the CAE Program • In the 60’s student participated the Civil Rights Marches with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. • Located in Fairfield, Alabama

  16. Stewart-Reddrick Hall The newest dormitory on campus, is housing for the males population and the male student athletes. Also, housing a tutorial lab on the second floor.

Myths about Miles College • Miles College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools • Miles College credit hours are transferrable • We don’t offer a masters program • We do not offer majors in Psychology or Physical Education • Miles College classes are as competitive as any other institution
