Setting the Scene Summary of the Civil War
What is a simulation? • A teacher-led, student-acted activity • Role-playing or reenacting. • Provides lifelike problem-solving experiences • History comes alive! YOU WILL BE SIMULATING EVENTS RELATED TO THE CIVIL WAR!
The Basics • Assign loyalty and select role • Track your attributes (qualities) • Scenarios (situations) • Keeping a journal (diaries) • Injury, disease & infection • If your HEALTH hits zero, you DIE! • If your MORALE hits zero, you DESERT (run away)!
Make Your Journal • Assemble the following: • 1 piece of blue/gray construction paper • Hole-punched copies • 5 sheets of loose leaf paper • 3 brass fasteners • Label the front with your character’s name! • Put YOUR NAME on the bottom right-hand corner of your journal!
What Side Are You On? • Divide into 2 Groups: • North=Union • South=Confederacy
A Soldier’s Journal • Carefully read the description for each role. • Consider the Attribute ratings for each role. • Be sure your unit includes a variety of roles! Selection Record • Record your role on the first page of journal. • List your attribute ratings! • Leave your rank and unit name blank for now!

Character Sketch (OPTIONAL) • In order to make your diary entries more believable, you will need to develop your identity as an American during the early 1860s. • Complete the character sketch worksheet assignment for your character for homework. • You should also draw/sketch a picture of your character!
