Government Regulations California Air Resources Board (CARB) CARB regulations state that it is illegal to modify the fuel delivery system and increase emissions into the atmosphere “Any device, apparatus, or mechanism intended for use with a pollution control device or system must not alter the original design of the system.” (CARB) Therefore, it is illegal to replace any low-permeation hose with a standard hose because it increases emissions. This applies to passenger cars, light truck, off-road vehicles, small engines & equipment.

MTBE / Ethanol as an Oxygenate Adding oxygen to gasoline allows for more complete combustion of the fuel, which reduces exhaust emissions of CO MTBE replaced lead in gasoline as an octane enhancer (anti -knock) in 1979 MTBE has been used at higher concentrations to fulfill the oxygenate requirements required by the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990(CAA) Oxygen helps gasoline burn more completely, reducing harmful tailpipe emissions from motor vehicles MTBE was proven to be a carcinogenic groundwater pollutant, many states banned The Energy Policy Act of 2005 further accelerated the demise of MTBE in that gasoline marketers did not receive MTBE liability protection Most refiners switched to ethanol after May 6, 2006 MTBE (methyl tertiary-butyl ether)
8. Ethanol Facts Ethanol has the advantages of MTBE without the same dangers. Is a readily available food source, A bushel of corn can produce 2.5 gallons of ethanol. One acre can take a car 5,000 miles @ 17.5 miles to the gallon Ethanol extends gasoline supplies as its production is encouraged by a federal tax credit of 51 cents per gallon It contains 35 percent oxygen by weight, twice the oxygen content of MTBE Ethanol is the highest-octane fuel in the market Ethanol is a solvent so it doesn't leave gummy deposits and helps keep the vehicle's fuel system clean for optimal performance

Ethanol Facts Ethanol can be considered a fuel detergent Ethanol attacks rubber seals, O-rings, fuel diaphragms, aluminum, plastics and other engine components Increase complaints concerning "check engine" lights which result in car‘s oxygen sensors not being able to measure oxygen correctly Boaters are having problems which include plugged fuel filters, fuel leaks (and fires resulting from the leaks), fiberglass gas tank failures, and ruined engines
10. Ethanol Phase Separation Ethanol loves water! Ethanol has an attraction and will readily mix with water at 50 X MBTE. Water is drawn into the fuel until saturation equals water + gasoline + ethanol (Phase Separation) It takes as little as 18 gallons of water in a 6,000 gallon tanks to cause Phase Separation of an 10% ethanol blend (approximately 3.8 teaspoons of water can be dissolved per gallon of the fuel before water begins to phase separate.) Phase separation allows most of the ethanol/water to separate from the fuel and drop to the bottom of the tank Reduced ethanol reduces the octane rating by as much as 3 octane numbers resulting in engine problems Two-stroke engines; Water-ethanol phase will compete with the blended oil for bonding to the metal engine parts thus not provide enough lubrication resulting in engine damage http://www.enertechlabs.com/fuel_phase_separation_in_ethanol.php

Ethanols problems Ethanol solvency differs from gasoline, Decrease shelf life of gasoline Decrease in octane and fuel efficiency and MPG Vapor lock or fuel starvation especially in carbureted engines at high attitudes (increases gasoline vapor pressure) Promotes fuel permeation through flexible lines Loosen rust and debris that might lay undisturbed in fuel systems and plugs filters , injectors, fuel jets It readily remove plasticizers and resins from certain plastic materials that might not be affected by gasoline alone. 15. Testimonial Emotions are Involved (Urgency) Gates TSM During a discussion today with Don, a Regional Manager for a large auto parts company, I brought up the advantages of Barricade hose. When I laid the Barricade flyer on his desk Don asked “Did someone call you about this today?” I replied no and he mentioned it was strange I would bring it up today. Turns out Don has a party barge and got it out the other day for a cruise. It wouldn’t run. He took it to a marine repair shop and the diagnosis was ethanol had destroyed the fuel line, clogged all 4 carburetors with the gunk from the rotting fuel line, and no telling what else it did. The repairs are $1200.00! Don is going to be in a web-x meeting with his managers tomorrow and their policy will change on how to enforced / sell Barricade Change came mainly after Don’s experience
