The Alpha Particle • Easily-Absorbable • Exact structure of a Helium atom • Approx. 8000x heavier than an electron • Easily ionized • Rapidly stop when penetrating material • Deflected in electromagnetic fields
The Beta Particle • Ejected from the nucleus of radioactive atoms • Is very light in mass • Tends to be faster than Alpha particles • Are not radioactive themselves • Penetrates more deeply than Alpha particles • Deflected in electromagnetic fields
Gamma Rays • Is electromagnetic radiation • Is a packet of EM energy which is a proton • Have very short wavelengths a few hundred nanometers • Have no mass or electrical charge • High penetration
