Yom Kippur • Yom Kippur in scripture is referenced as: • Day of Atonement • Leviticus 23: 27-32, Leviticus 25:9 • Atonement (Kippur) Expiation (only in plur.) – atonment. • Root: Kaphar (Kaw-far); to cover (spec. with bitumen (an asphalt of Asia Minor used as cement or mortar) fig. to expiate or condone, to placate or cancel – appease, make an atonement, cleanse, disannul, forgive, be merciful, pacify, pardon, to pitch, purge (away), put off, (make) reconcile (-liation)

Yom Kippur • When does it occur? • Tishri 10 • Yom Kippur served as a reminder that the daily, weekly and monthly sacrifices made at the altar of burnt offering were not sufficient to atone for sin. • At the altar of burnt offering the worshiper stood “afar off” unable to approach the Holy Presence of God, who was manifest between the cherubim in the Holy of Holies. • On this one day each year (Yom Kippur) atoning blood was brought into the Holy of Holies, the divine throne room, by the high priest as the representative of the people.

  5. Yom Kippur • The commandment itself explains the weakness of the law. • The Jew knew something was missing. There is a multitude of sacrifices.
