  1. Seven Sabbaths Part 5 Yom Kippur

  2. Yom Kippur

  3. Yom Kippur • Yom Kippur in scripture is referenced as: • Day of Atonement • Leviticus 23: 27-32, Leviticus 25:9 • Atonement (Kippur) Expiation (only in plur.) – atonment. • Root: Kaphar (Kaw-far); to cover (spec. with bitumen (an asphalt of Asia Minor used as cement or mortar) fig. to expiate or condone, to placate or cancel – appease, make an atonement, cleanse, disannul, forgive, be merciful, pacify, pardon, to pitch, purge (away), put off, (make) reconcile (-liation)

  4. Yom Kippur • When does it occur? • Tishri 10 • Yom Kippur served as a reminder that the daily, weekly and monthly sacrifices made at the altar of burnt offering were not sufficient to atone for sin. • At the altar of burnt offering the worshiper stood “afar off” unable to approach the Holy Presence of God, who was manifest between the cherubim in the Holy of Holies. • On this one day each year (Yom Kippur) atoning blood was brought into the Holy of Holies, the divine throne room, by the high priest as the representative of the people.

  5. Yom Kippur • The commandment itself explains the weakness of the law. • The Jew knew something was missing. There is a multitude of sacrifices. The sacrifices attempt to supplement one another but there was still something missing. • Paul’s writings declare the missing element of the Law. • Hebrews 10: 1-24 (attention to vs. 1 & 4) • Hebrews 7: 19-28 • Ref vs. 21 Psalms 110: 4 • Ref vs. 26 Ephesians 1: 19-23 • Ref vs. 27 Leviticus 9: 7, 16: 6, 11 & 15, Romans 6: 9-10 • Ref vs. 28 Hebrews 5: 1-2, Hebrews 2: 6-10

  6. As the high priest of the Old Testament entered the Holy of Holies with the blood of his sacrificial victim, so Jesus entered heaven itself to appear before the Father on behalf of His people Hebrews 9: 1-14 Yom Kippur

  7. Yom Kippur • The Sin Offering • Leviticus 16: 2-10, 18, 22 • Isaiah 1: 18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

  8. Yom Kippur • The Second Name for Yom Kippur • The Day of Judgment • II Peter 3: 7-13 • Matthew 25: 31-34 • II Corinthians 5:10 • Romans 5: 1-2

  9. Yom Kippur • In the coming judgment, there is forgiveness and mercy and grace to those who have already received Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, Who gave His life as a ransom for us! • Romans 5: 1-2
