RESEARCH AT ITC PhD Programme Visiting Scientist Programme Joint Research Programme
Economic Factors Full time residential courses in Europe often unaffordable to foreign students Cost of living often key factor Mid career professionals often wish to upgrade but unable to spend long periods away from work • Possible solutions: • Distance Education • Educational partnerships • Joint Education Programmes
Distance Education • Several modules of their Postgraduate diploma and MSc degree courses as Distance courses. • Study load of 20 to 24 hours : 5 ECTS • Task-based learning blends theory & practice • Gives some exemptions from residential courses • Fee reduction for OECD citizens and residents • Fellowships available through NFP
In the framework of institutional development To address the increasing demand for flexibility in academic degree courses With research partners who contribute complementary scientific expertise PARTNERSHIPS
Outside Europe • Already implemented in Bolivia, China, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Iran, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Tanzania With European institutes • Two MSc courses have been implemented: • Geo-information Science and Earth Observation for Environmental Modelling and Management (GEM): • Geographical Information Management and Applications (GIMA): EDUCATION PARTNERSHIPS
ITC has entered into partnership with reputable qualified educational organisations in many countries Target 2010: • 20 locations • 350 students / 3,500 student months JOINT COURSES
Joint Course Structures Three programme construction variations • Taught fully at partner location • Commence with partner, period in ITC, finish with partner • Commence with partner, end at ITC
Indian Institute for Remote Sensing - IIRS • Under National Remote Sensing Centre, Department of Space, Govt. of India, Situated in Dehra Dun • Premier training and educational institute set up for developing trained professionals • Evolved from Indian Photo-Interpretation Institute • Collaborated with ITC since inception in 1966
The Main Function of the Institute • Capacity building through technology transfer among user community, • Education at post-graduate level in the application of RS & Geoinformatics for Natural Resources Management • Promotion of research in RS & Geoinformatics. • Provides value-added services in natural resources management, remote sensing, GIS and GPS technology.
IIRS Departments • Dean’s Office • Agriculture and Soil • Forestry and Ecology • Geoinformatics • Geosciences • Human & Urban Settlement Analysis • IIRS Library • Marine & Atmospheric Sciences Photogrammetry • Water Resources
Educational Programmes Offered by IIRS • Master of Science Programme • M.Sc. in Geoinformatics * • M.Sc. in Natural Hazards & Disaster Risk Management * • Master of Technology Programme • M.Tech in Remote Sensing and GIS applications • Postgraduate Programme • Agriculture & Soils • Forestry & Ecology • Geosciences • Geoinformatics * • Marine & Atmospheric Sciences • Natural Hazards and Disaster Risk Management * • Urban & Regional Planning and; • Water Resources
Joint Education Strategy ITC/IIRS • ITC educational scheme for Master of Science Programme is based on ‘blocks and modules’ • IIRS curriculum was broadly similar and syllabi ‘converged’ (although originally with different timing) • Period at ITC to be minimized with only essential advance topics covered • Timing of courses later fully converged. • Joint responsibility for quality control. • ITC staff visit IIRS for teaching, research and collaboration.
Joint ITC – IIRS Educational Programmes • Master of Science Programme • Geoinformatics • Natural Hazards & Disaster Risk Management Commences and ends in India – period in ITC • Postgraduate Programme • Geoinformatics • Natural Hazards and Disaster Risk Management Fully taught in India
Joint Geoinfromatics MSc Programme Structure • Duration: 18 months (starts in September each year) • 15 months will be spent at IIRS including 6 months of research • 3 months of advanced modules and research proposal defence at ITC (June to August) The M.Sc. Degree will be awarded by the University of Twente.
Joint Geo-Hazards MSc Programme Structure • Duration: 18 months (starts in September each year) • 15 months will be spent at IIRS including 6 months of research • 3 months of advanced modules ( 8-12 ) at ITC (March-June) The M.Sc. Degree will be awarded by the University of Twente
Full 18 month MSc in Holland costs a total of €28,430 (± 17 Lakhs) of which €16,480 (58%) is living, accommodation and insurance cost Joint MSc, with 3 months in Holland costs a total of € 8,170 (± 4.9 Lakhs), of which the total cost of the three months in Holland is € 4,900 Economics of the Joint Course
Course Admission Procedure • For Joint MSc Commencing in September application deadline is in June • Candidates are undergo written test and interview in July • Netherlands Fellowships COULD be available, but deadline is preceding 1st February.
Future Ahead …. • Geo Design is a new an up-coming field • Specialized field with emphasis on architectural planning and landscape studies • A few of the Geo Design topics are part of curriculum at IIRS and ITC • Still evolving – to be part of regular programme.
Conclusions • ITC and IIRS have experienced long and fruitful relationship • Many academic and research fields of mutual interest • Good staff exchange and collaboration • Joint ITC/IIRS MSc is cost effective route for providing high quality Indian MSc with European ‘flavour’. • European Union keen to enhance educational links and credit transfer between India and EU.
THE END THANK YOU
