Psalm 32:1-5 1 How blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, Whose sin is covered! 2 How blessed is the man to whom the LORD does not impute iniquity, And in whose spirit there is no deceit! 3 When I kept silent about my sin, my body wasted away Through my groaning all day long. 4 For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; My vitality was drained away as with the fever heat of summer. 5 I acknowledged my sin to You, And my iniquity I did not hide; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD”; And You forgave the guilt of my sin.
Blessed = Happy (אֶשֶׁר ʼesher ) 1 How blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, Whose sin is covered! 2 How blessed is the man to whom the LORD does not impute iniquity, And in whose spirit there is no deceit! (Ps.32:1-2)
Blessed = Happy Forgiven 1 How happy is he whose transgression is forgiven, Whose sin is covered! 2 How happy is the man to whom the LORD does not impute iniquity, And in whose spirit there is no deceit! (Ps.32:1-2) • When our sin is forgiven by almighty God… • Happy is our condition! • Happy is our state of mind! • Happy are our prospects! • Immediately • In the temporal future • In eternity • Think about this and get forgiven quickly • Happy is a good place to be! Get Forgiven… Get Happy!
David Was Stressed Out! 3 When I kept silent about my sin, my body wasted away Through my groaning all day long. 4 For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; My vitality was drained away as with the fever heat of summer. (Ps.32:3-4) • This is a description of the effect of sin on the whole person • Sin takes a psychological and physical toll • Sin leads to stress and anxiety • Stress crosses from mental to emotional to physical • Heavy hand of God pressing down • Sleeplessness • Weakness • Depression • Illness
Do we keep silent about our sin? 3When I kept silent about my sin, my body wasted away Through my groaning all day long. 4 For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; My vitality was drained away as with the fever heat of summer. (Ps.32:3-4) • God’s gift of a clean heart is so simple to receive, so why do we keep silent? • We like it and don’t want to turn from it • Perceive that we get temporal benefit or pleasure • No merit badges for humility • Our culture does not admit mistakes, much less sins • Culture of justification rather than contrition • Pride is extolled as virtue • Penetrates our psyche such that it can be difficult to be honest with ourselves
Do we keep silent about our sin? 3When I kept silent about my sin, my body wasted away Through my groaning all day long. 4 For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; My vitality was drained away as with the fever heat of summer. (Ps.32:3-4) • “Behold, You desire truth in the innermost being…” (Ps.51:6) • Do you keep silent about the sins of your heart? • If we don’t call the “little” sins of the heart “sins,” and they are sins, then we’re keeping silent about our sin just as David did • If that’s true, then we are likely being emotionally and even physically affected by this continuation in sin • Where’s this stress coming from? • “…my groaning all day long…” • What happened to the joy I used to have? • “…restore to me the joy of Your salvation…”
Do we keep silent about our sin? Let’s Check it Out… • “This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you.”(John 15:12) • He loves us sacrificially • He loves us unconditionally • If I don’t have love, “I am nothing…” (1 Cor.13:2) • 4Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, 5does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, 6does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. (1 Cor.13:4-7)
Do we keep silent about our sin? Let’s Check it Out… • “This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you.”(John 15:12) • “Love is patient” • No frustration! No blame shift. Just love! • Love “is kind” • Gentle, courteous. Searching to do good to others • Love “is not jealous” • Participating in the good things that happen to others • Love “does not brag, is not arrogant” • Arrogance in heart happens when you really are better than others • Love “does not seek its own” • Phil.3:3 “Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves.” Gotchya!
Do we keep silent about our sin? Let’s Check it Out… • “This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you.”(John 15:12) • Love “is not provoked” • This is not controlling your reaction when you’re provoked • Love “does not take into account a wrong suffered” • Are you keeping track of wrongs, remembering? • Failing to love (sin) in this way leads to bitterness and division • Love “does not rejoice in unrighteousness but rejoices with the truth” • Love takes no pleasure in hearing that others have done wrong • Love rejoices with others’ virtues • Love “bears/believes/hopes/endures all things” • Covers others shortcomings • Assumes good motives and intentions • Even when things look bad, hopes the best for others in the end • Endures mistreatment without complaint over the long haul
Do we keep silent about our sin? Let’s Check it Out… • This standard is too high! • “Nobody can really love like this,” so drop the standard • Live our lives in disobedience to Christ’s command • We don’t even stay conscious of the sins of our heart • We are deceived • Like David, we are “Keeping silent about our sin.” • Living in God’s grace does not mean ignore sin… God doesn’t • “I will be constantly going to God for forgiveness!” • Good point! What’s the problem? • Where else will you receive the true humility that God wants to bless? • “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.” (Ps.51:17) • You don’t want to find yourself as the Pharisee!
Consequences of Keeping Silent About Our Sin • Satan’s most effective deception is for us to be in sin and not be keenly aware of our need to confess and turn from that sin • Small, socially acceptable sins • Sins of the heart that nobody else knows about • Before long we find we’ve lost the joy of our salvation • Going through the motions of devotions • Cold prayer life • Don’t get much out of church • Reality is that we’ve fallen into sin and deceived our hearts • We may practice “religion” but we’re not enjoying God’s presence • The “religion” we practice perpetuates the deception • Used to deny the reality of sin and to justify ourselves to God
Consequences of Keeping Silent About Our Sin • Sins of the heart happen • Pride cuts in • Leads to bigger issues • Creates a mess • Huge issue for families and for the church • People managing all these “little” sins rather than just getting rid of them • Problems and conflicts in the church • Unhappiness in the church • What’s needed is humility • Before God • In our relationships • Get rid of pride and get forgiveness
Ever say, “I feel miserable…” ?? 3 When I kept silent about my sin, my body wasted away Through my groaning all day long. 4 For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; My vitality was drained away as with the fever heat of summer. (Ps.32:3-4) • I feel miserable in… • My health • My studies • My job • My family • My ministry • My church • So I… • Go to the Doctor • Change majors • Change jobs • Leave home • Step down • Change churches First go for God’s grace in forgiveness as you ask Him to examine yourheart! 5I acknowledged my sin to You, And my iniquity I did not hide; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD”; And You forgave the guilt of my sin.
Get Forgiven… Get Happy! 1 How happy is he whose transgression is forgiven, Whose sin is covered! 2 How happy is the man to whom the LORD does not impute iniquity, And in whose spirit there is no deceit! (Ps.32:1-2) • Restore to you the joy of your salvation! (Ps.51:12) • Remember: • “The heart after God’s heart” was “re-created” by the Creator! (Ps.51:10) • God “desires truth in the innermost being…” and He gives it! • This comes with your miraculously cleansed heart! • You only have to receive it, just as you did the first time • “Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him.” (Col.2:6) • Only pride, denial, justification or rationalization keeps you from the day-by-day happiness that Christ died to give
