  2. SO WHAT ARE THE NEW REQUIREMENTS THAT I NEED TO KNOW AS A FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR UNDER THE NEW RULES?

  3. 14 CFR PART 61 TWO NEW SUBPARTS SUBPART J – SPORT PILOTS SUBPART K – FLIGHT INSTRUCTORS WITH A SPORT PILOT RATING

  4. OPERATING LIMITS AND ENDORSEMENT REQUIREMENTS ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR QUESTIONS ASKED IS ADDRESSED IN 14 CFR 61.303.

  5. If I want to operate a light sport aircraft, what operating limits and endorsement requirements in this subpart must I comply with? For example: I am a private pilot and hold a single engine land certificate with a Part 67 medical certificate: SUBPART J – SPORT PILOTS 14 CFR SECTION 61.303

  6. If you hold (1) A medical certificate If I want to operate a light-sport aircraft, what operating limits and endorsement requirements in this subpart must I comply with? 14 CFR §61.303(a)(1)

  7. And you hold (ii) At least a recreational pilot certificate with a category and class rating, 14 CFR §61.303(a)(1)(ii)

  8. Then you can operate • Any light sport aircraft in • that category and class 14 CFR §61.303(a)(1)(ii)(A)

  9. And • You do not have to hold any of the • endorsements required by this • Subpart, nor do you have to comply • with the limitations of §61.315. 14 CFR §61.303(a)(1)(ii)(A)(1)

  10. If I want to operate a light-sport aircraft, what operating limits and endorsement requirements in this subpart must I comply with? If you hold (2) Only a U.S. driver’s license For example: I am a sport pilot and hold single engine land privileges with a valid United States driver’s license: 14 CFR §61.303(a)(2)

  11. And you hold (i) A sport pilot certificate, 14 CFR §61.303(a)(2)(i)

  12. Then you can operate • Any light sport aircraft for which • you hold the endorsements required • for its category, class, make and model, 14 CFR §61.303(a)(2)(i)(A)

  13. And • You must hold any other endorsements • required by this subpart, and comply • with the limitations of §61.315. 14 CFR §61.303(a)(2)(i)(A)(1)

  14. If I want to operate a light-sport aircraft, what operating limits and endorsement requirements in this subpart must comply with? If you hold (2) Only a U.S. driver’s license For example: I am a recreational pilot or higher and hold single engine land privileges with a valid U.S. driver’s license: 14 CFR §61.303(a)(2)

  15. And you hold (iii) At least a recreational pilot certificate but not a rating for the category and class of light sport aircraft you operate, 14 CFR §61.303(a)(2)(iii)

  16. Then you can operate • This specific light sport aircraft, • only if you hold the endorsements • required in §61.321for its category • and class, 61.321 Proficiency check 14 CFR §61.303(a)(2)(iii)(A)

  17. And • You must comply with the limitations in §61.315, except §61.315(c)(14) and, if a private pilot or higher, §61.315(c)(7). 61.315 (c)( 7) airspace 61.315(c)(14) airspeed 14 CFR §61.303(a)(2)(iii)(A)(1)

  18. If I want to operate a light-sport aircraft, what operating limits and endorsement requirements in this subpart must I comply with? If you hold (3) Neither a medical certificate nor a U.S. driver’s license, For example: I am a private pilot and hold a single engine land certificate with no Part 67 medical certificate or valid U.S. driver’s license: 14 CFR §61.303(a)(3)

  19. And you hold (ii) At least a private pilot certificate, but not a rating for glider or balloon, 14 CFR §61.303(a)(3)(iii)

  20. Then you can operate • Only a light sport glider or balloon, • if you hold the endorsements required • in §61.321 for its category and class, §61.321 Proficiency check 14 CFR §61.303(a)(3)(iii)(A)

  21. And • You must comply with the limitations in §61.315, except §61.315(c)(14) and, if a private or higher, §61.315(c)(7). 61.315 (c)( 7) airspace 61.315(c)(14) airspeed 14 CFR §61.303(a)(3)(iii)(A)(1)

What are the privileges of my flight instructor certificate with a sport pilot rating? ..within the limits of your certificate and rating • student training • sport pilot and flight instructor training • powered parachute and weight shift control – • private pilot • flight review or operating privileges • practical and knowledge test preparation • proficiency checks for additional category or class 14 CFR §61.413

  23. What are the limits of a flight instructor certificate with a sport pilot rating? • you must hold category and class privileges • at sport pilot level or higher • applicable category and class privileges on • flight instructor certificate 14 CFR §61.415

  24. What are the limits of a flight instructor certificate with a sport pilot rating? (continued) • private powered parachute and weight shift control requires private certificate and appropriate flight instructor privileges • cannot conduct more than 8 hours of flight training in a 24-consecutive-hour period 14 CFR §61.415

  25. What are the limits of a flight instructor certificate with a sport pilot rating? (continued) You can not endorse a student pilot certificate or logbook unless: • you provide the flight training • you review the cross-country planning • you provide the airspace training • you conduct the flight review in accordance • with §61.56 14 CFR §61.415

  26. What are the limits of a flight instructor certificate with a sport pilot rating? (continued) • must have airspace endorsement in accordance with • §61.325 to provide training • must have endorsement to provide training in • aircraft with a VH in accordance with §61.327 14 CFR §61.415

  27. What are the limits of a flight instructor certificate with a sport pilot rating? (continued) • must conduct training in an aircraft that meets the requirements of §91.109 • must conduct training in an aircraft with two pilot stations • single place pre-solo training must be conducted in a two pilot station aircraft in the appropriate category and class 14 CFR §61.415

  28. What are the record keeping requirements for a flight instructor with a sport pilot rating? • sign logbook or training record • keep record of the name, date, and type • endorsement • - student pilot for solo flight privileges • knowledge and practical, proficiency check, • and flight review • additional privileges in accordance with §61.321, • §61.325, and/or §61.327 14 CFR §61.423

  29. What are the record keeping requirements for a flight instructor with a sport pilot rating? (continued) • within 10 days after providing an endorsement • for a person to operate or provide training • in an additional category or class… • - complete, sign and submit application to: • AFS-760, PO BOX 25082Oklahoma City, OK 73125-0082 • retain copy & must keep records required by this • section for 3 years 14 CFR §61.423

  30. May I exercise the privileges of a flight instructor with a sport pilot rating if I hold a flight instructor certificate with another rating? • If you hold a current flight instructor certificate • issued under subpart H: • limited to category and class ratings listed • must comply with §61.413 (privileges) • must comply with §61.415 (limits) and §61.423 • (record keeping requirements) • for additional category or class must comply • with §61.419 14 CFR §61.429

How do I obtain privileges to provide training in an additional category or class of light sport aircraft? • Receive an endorsement from an authorized • instructor who trained you in areas of • operation listed in §61.409 • Successfully complete a proficiency check from • another authorized flight instructor • Complete an application (FAA Form 8710-11) • Receive a logbook endorsement certifying you are • proficient in the additional category or class 14 CFR §61.419
