  2. Area 51 • Area 51 is located about 90 miles north of Las Vegas, Nevada. • The United States denied the existence of Area 51 until Soviet satellite pictures proved it was there. • It is also referred to as Groom Lake and Dreamland (supposedly from Edgar Allan Poe’s Poem). • It was originally created to be a U-2 spy plane testing facility. • Although there are obviously several other theories as to what it is used for.

  3. Toxic Wastes • Chemicals were used in manufacturing the aircrafts. • Since the base was so secluded, they had to find different ways to get rid of the waste material. • Huge trenches were dug and filled with 55 gallon drums of hazardous wastes. • After they poured jet fuel on them and burned them. • This makes the hazardous waste more dangerous because it is easier for it to enter the body.

  4. London Fog • The location that they chose to burn the smoke traveled towards the building. • The heavy smoke was then referred to as “London Fog.” • Then workers reported to get symptoms known to be caused by hazardous wastes.

  5. Robert Frost • A sheet metal worker at Area 51 in 1989. • He was exposed to the smoke from the hazardous wastes. • His symptoms included: • His skin peeling off his face • It had a scaly feeling to it and would peel everyday. • His face constantly felt like it was on fire • His eyes burned • Blisters and sores all over his body • Eventually he ended up committing suicide in 1988.

  6. Helen Frost Lawsuit • Other workers had symptoms similar to Robert. • Their doctors told them the only way they could help them is if they knew what toxic chemicals they were exposed to. • The government refused to release this information as well as the information from Robert’s autopsy. • Helen Frost then filed a lawsuit against the government in 1996. • Jonathan Turley was hired to defend the workers in court. • It took 3 years for them to go to court.

  7. Helen Frost Lawsuit • Turley had to prove that Area 51 existed before he could really make a case. • The case was then dismissed. • The government could neither confirm or deny what had happened. • The ninth U.S. circuit court of appeals rules that workers are not entitled to learn of the hazardous substances. • The base is exempt from environmental laws (President Clinton).
