Chapter 5 Energy!
Energy is needed everywhere… • Write down 3 instances in your everyday life that you see energy being used!
What is energy? • Energy is the ability to do work (move) or cause change.
Think about this… • Energy can be thought of as MONEY • If someone gives you $100… • You can cash it • Save it • Deposit it • Transfer to a bank account • Put on a pre paid card • Trade cash for gold/ jewels • Money is money! Just like energy is energy...and like money it comes in different forms...
Energy forms • Electrical • Chemical • Radiant • Thermal
Energy causing motion… • There is a type of energy used to describe objects in motion. • Kinetic energy= energy a moving object has because of its motion • And yes, there is an equation to help us solve for how much kinetic energy an object has! • KE= ½ (m)(v)2 • Unit: Joules (J)
Motionless objects have energy, too! • Motionless objects, like a flower vase sitting in a window above a busy sidewalk or an apple in a tree have stored energy. • Potential energy= stored energy due to position
3 types of potential energy… • Elastic potential energy= energy stored by something that can stretch or compress, such as a rubber band or spring • Chemical potential energy= energy stored in chemical bonds • Gravitational potential energy=energy stored by objects due to the position above Earth’s surface
We can calculate Gravitational Potential Energy • GPE= (m)(g)(h) • g= 9.8 m/s2 (always, unless the problem says otherwise) • What’s our unit again?? (Same as kinetic energy)
