WORKLIFE BALANCE Choosing how you spend your time and energy Does not mean you have to allot equal hours to every aspect of your life Changes over time Balance is different for each person Different priorities Achievement and Enjoyment/fulfillment
STRATEGIES FOR ACHIEVING BALANCE 1. Planning by . . . . • Identifying Priorities from the wheel • Ask “What’s Missing?” • Setting Goals
PICK A GOAL Take a blank sheet of paper and describe your goal in 250 words or less.
EXAMPLE OF GOALS Kids: Attend one soccer game per week.
2. MANAGE YOUR TIME Chunking time • Periods of dedicated time - recurring • Breaking down projects in blocks • You control this time • Be firm and disciplined Additional Strategies: • Be aware of your time wasters • Diminish your time wasters • Establish daily, weekly routines • Have a family calendar • Make a back-up plan for the unexpected • Develop a system - ease transition times between work & home • Use time management skills at home
3. SETTING LIMITS The most effective way to set limits? “Just say No!” NO is a complete sentence.
Your Golden Delegating Tip: Sometimes it’s worth finding the money… and paying someone to do something for you! Many of us think that we can’t afford to pay someone else for services we can do ourselves quite well, thank you very much! But here’s a question to ask yourself: is the price you are paying in your relationships, your stress levels, and your peace of mind too heavy? If your answer is that ‘yes, the price is getting too heavy’, find the dollars and make it happen!
4. ESTABLISHING SUPPORT SYSTEMS • Friends and Family • Resources in your community • Others in same situation • Your neighbours • Teachers, Doctors, etc. • Activities for the kids • Coworkers, Bosses • Mentors
5. Me time Nurture activities that will boost energy and increase balance: • Hobbies • Music • Humour • Exercise • Breaks • Relaxation
