WHY VOLUNTEER? • Welcome students into the STEM pipeline at an early age and encourage them to consider STEM majors/careers • Provide students with a meaningful opportunity to meet STEM experts • Explain how science and math are utilized by engineers • Discuss real-life applications of the tools and concepts that students learn in the classroom • Introduce students to STEM careers • In the case of the afterschool program, support students completing Student Driven Projects – using STEM to improve aspects of their community SABES supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant No. DUE-1237992

  6. MENTOR VS. GUEST SPEAKER WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE? • Afterschool Mentor • Long-term commitment • In pairs, mentors visit the classroom one day a week for 2 hours • Build relationships with students and facilitator • Encourage students • Support for learning critical thinking skills and Engineering Design Process • Guest Speaker • Short-term commitment • Requested due to specific need by teacher or afterschool Student Driven Project • Potentially teach content SABES supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant No. DUE-1237992
