  2. Being a Food Detective • Food comes from world wide sources • Hard to determine the origin of ingredients • The label is a good starting point

  3. Ingredients in Candy Bars • Cocoa • Sugar • Soybeans • Dairy

  4. Cocoa • Cultivation originated in Mexico and Central America • Now grown in Tropical Countries • Has bitter flavor

  5. Sugar • Processed from sugar cane or sugar beets • Some from corn • India & Cuba produce 1/3 of all sugar cane • Sugar cane is also grown in the U.S. • Sugar beets are grown all around the world

  6. Soybeans • Found in many types of products • Grow all over the U.S.

  7. Dairy • Milk • Cheese • Cream

  8. Fruits & Vegetables • Generally seasonal • Some available year round • More expensive & lower quality out-of-season • Imports • Can use controlled environments to lengthen growing season
