Horace Greeley Horace Greeley • One of the founders of the Republican Party was Horace Greeley. • In June 1854, he said “ A simple name ‘Republican’ would more fitly designate thoughts who had united to restore the union to extreme mission of champion and promulgator of Liberty rather than propagandist of slavery.” http://www.ushistory.org/gop/origins.htm
