  2. Purpose: Our overall purpose is for CPA students to complete National History Day projects and to use the Smithsonian resources to make them better

  3. Step 2: Exploring NHD Let’s find out what all the excitement is about!

  4. Levels of Competition • Individual Schools • Prince George’s County History Day • Maryland History Day • National History Day

  5. 2014 Topic and Theme • Students can select any topic • 2014 theme: Rights and Responsibilities in History • Rule Book and Theme Book will be posted and shared

  6. Formats • 3 categories*: • Research Papers (Individual ONLY) • Websites (Individual OR Group) • Exhibits (Individual OR Group) *CPA students won’t be doing documentaries or performances

  7. Research for ALL • Focus on process, not just the product • Primary sources evident in presentation • Secondary sources evident in presentation • Citation (In-text, MLA) • Online Resources should Not only be from Wikipedia • Interviews encouraged

  8. What are exhibits? 500 or less student-composed words 6 feet Tall, MAX Multi-media, traditional elements Annotated Bibliography Process Paper

  9. What are Websites? • No more than 1,200 visible, student-composed words. • The home page must include the names of participants, entry title, division, and a main menu that directs viewers to the various sections of the site. • Pages must be interconnected with hypertext links. • NO LIVE LINKS that take you outside the site • Single multimedia clip may not last more than 45 seconds and may not include student-composed narration.

  10. What are Websites? • The student must operate all software and equipment in the development of the web site. • Include properly cited footnotes • Included properly formatted annotated bibliography • Include a process paper • Should be a Weebly site that is hosted on the nhd.org server: http://nhd.weebly.com

  11. What are Historical Papers? • Title Page • Annotated Bibliography • Must clearly relate to theme • Evidence of research using primary & secondary sources • 1,500-2,000 words in length (approx. 6- 10 pgs) • Include properly cited footnotes, end notes or in-text citation)

  12. Research happens for ALL projects • Focus on process, not just the product • Primary sources evident in presentation • Secondary sources evident in presentation • Citation (In-text, MLA) • Online Resources should Not only be from Wikipedia • Interviews encouraged

  13. Judging Process • There are minimum of 3 judges per category, per level • Many representatives from our local sponsorships have judged as well as teachers

  14. Student support • Support at CPA from UMD and SI • Step by step guidance during school • Archive Sessions (January, February) • Students get one-on-one help from museum professionals on their projects • Museum Partnerships with Schools • Bridge Session for Students who Advance to State Competition

  15. Maryland History Day • University of Maryland, Baltimore County, Saturday, May 3, at UMBC • National competition, June @ University of Maryland, College Park
