  2. Medication • A drug used to treat of prevent a disease or condition

  3. Oral • Given by mouth; liquid or solid

  4. Rectal • Medication given in the rectum; liquids and suppositories.

  5. Injections • Medication given with needle and syringe

  6. Subcutaneous Injection • Subcutaneous- injected into the layer just under the skin • SQ or SC • Insulin

  7. Intramuscular injection • IM • Injected into a muscle • Antibiotic

  8. Intravenous injection • IV • Injected into vein • IV fluids, other medications

  9. Intradermal injection • Injected just under the top layer of skin • Skin test for TB; allergy testing

  10. Topical or local medication • Applied directly to the top of the skin • Ointment, sprays, liquids, and adhesive patches

  11. Inhalation • Medication breathed in, inhaled by way of sprays, inhalers.

  12. Sublingual • Given under the tongue

  13. Liquids • Suspension-solid med dissolved in liquid • Syrup- concentrated solution of sugar, water, and medication • Tincture-medication dissolved in alcohol • All must be poured at eye level

  14. Solids • Capsules-gelatin-like shell with medication inside • Pill-powdered medication mixed with a cohesive substance and molded into shape • Tablet-compressed or molded preparation

  15. Solids continued • Troche or lozenge-large, flat disc that is dissolved in the mouth • Enteric coated- medication with a special coating that does not dissolve until the substance reaches the small intestine

  16. Semi-solids • Ointment-medication in fatty base • Paste-ointment with adhesive substance • Cream-medication with water soluble base • Suppository-med mixed with substance that melts at body temperature

  18. Safety rules in giving medications • Read order carefully • Check allergies • Check label three times

  19. Safety Rules • Administer only on the order of a physician • Never administer a medication you did not personally prepare • Be familiar with the drug you are administering

  20. Safety • Store in cool dry place • Out of reach of children • Check expiration dates on all meds

  21. Safety • Never use med from unmarked bottle • Discard unused medication, do not return it to a bottle. • Report all mistakes immediately

  22. Safety • Avoid distractions • Avoid mental math. Use pencil and paper for calculations
