  2. WLOE Requirements for Oklahoma • Grades PK-3 – Awareness • Grades 4-8 – Articulated, sequential program of study (365 hours recommended) • Grades 9-12 – Continuation of 4-8 program leading to higher proficiency • Option of long-term PK-12 program or immersion programs

  3. Recommendations • Declare world languages as a critical shortage area • Work with teacher preparation programs • Convene committee of all stakeholders to create implementation timeline • Recognize exemplary high school programs • Identify model programs at elementary and middle school levels

  4. Recommendations • Ensure that data accurately reflects programs • Utilize certified teachers • Seek solutions to Native American language and elementary immersion certification • Promote full or partial immersion programs that allow content instruction in a second language
