General approach to ITE • The conception of ITE has been defined by three elements: Didactics/pedagogy • But: It was the students’ own responsibility to connect the three elements Practice Subject(s) Danish Ministry of Education

Motivation behind the reform from 2007 • Policy goals: • One of the ambitions behind the reform was to better support the connection behind the three elements from the policy side • Strengthen the position of teaching practice • New elements • Teaching practice upgraded in the act • Teaching practice integrated in the various courses • Specification of the goals of teaching practice Danish Ministry of Education
Organisation, scope and content of teaching practice • Teaching practice constitutes 36 ECTS points/24 weeks (15 % of the total programme) • Placed at regular intervals throughout the programme • Very specific descriptions of the content • Progression from year 1-4 • Teaching practice in each chosen subject • Policy requirement that collaboration between the different elements takes place Danish Ministry of Education
Reality… • Improvements • Vox pop (students and teachers) • Preliminary evaluation of reform • But • Students still find it difficult to connect the three elements • Students have an “artificial” perception of teaching practice Danish Ministry of Education
Rethinking teaching practice… • Minister of Education launches new idea… • “School-based teacher education” • Work and education at the same time • First “experiments” from August 2009 • E.g.: Dyssengårdsskolen Gentofte • 2 days of work – 2 days of school • Mentoring and guidance • Difference between teaching practice and “real work” • More to come in the future (?)
