  1. The Power of Solar Energy By Gwennie Anderson Cam Barker & Sammie Gilbert

  2. Solar is Latin for sun • Solar energy is energy from the sun • It can be converted into a heat source (thermal) or an energy source (electrical) What is Solar Energy?

  3. Panels called photovoltaics (PV devices) or “solar cells” absorb the sun’s energy • The cells transform the heat from the sun into electricity How Does it Work?

  4. Heating water for homes • Electricity for homes • Outdoor lights • Calculators • Heating fluids (like water) and producing steam for power generators Uses of Solar Energy

  5. Very few people use solar energy. This chart shows that in 2012, only 2% of the 9% of renewable energy is solar energy.

  6. Pros Cons Needs sun (cloudy days reduce solar power) Solar power plants take up land The sun does not deliver much energy to one place at a time Large cost in the beginning for solar equipment • The sun is free! • Solar energy is renewable • Solar energy is clean-burning • Save money over time Advantages and Disadvantages

  7. While Indiana has its fair share of sunny days, there are also many cloudy days. This means it would be hard to power everything from the sun. However, solar energy could be a good backup source of energy. Solar systems can REDUCE the amount of energy used from a non-renewable source which can make it worth it if everyone did it. Is Solar Energy Good for the Future of Indiana?
