Addiction help-lines on the Web From virtual chaos to healing processes Peter Sandström, Social therapist, Net counsellor
The dialogue… A huge dialogue has been going on on the WEB since the late 90ties.. .. ”virtuallife” - ”real life” .. on the Web is going a constant fight between ”the good” and ”the bad”.. .. in ”the virtual chaos” the need of help and support have increased.. .. help&support (professional..) on the Net Peter Sandström, Social therapist, Net counsellor
The Net as a bad trap Living in the virtuality lead to conflicts: • constant need of excitement and rapid satisfaction (kicks) • gambling/excessive use of the Internet, utilization (sexual), feed ”use and throw away mentality” • causes harms in other areas of life • exhaust from reality Peter Sandström, Social therapist, Net counsellor
www for a better world? • Gives excellent tools for understanding, luck and peace? • Makes us more intelligent? • Gives welfare, democracy and possibilities to poor countries? OR - increase inequality? - deepen the gap between the rich and the poor? The Web is one of the biggest reasons why dependence- and behaviour problems have increased in the last 10 years. Peter Sandström, Social therapist, Net counsellor
The Net as an instrument of care and love • Lower the threshold for seeking help • Info, support and self-help tools • Net counselling • Virtual communities Possibility to keep psychological distance; Anonymity is the central value open 24h – ”here and now” Peter Sandström, Social therapist, Net counsellor
Not only the Web Though the Web is a useful instrument, it will never replace the need of direct face to face contact between people, organizations and nations! Peter Sandström, Social therapist, Net counsellor
But the fact is that… the message is always an attempt to communicate, it tells about a huge desire to connect with someone (many have failed in their attempts to get help and empathy). Peter Sandström, Social therapist, Net counsellor
