  2. compound subjects and compound predicates #2 • A compound predicate (or compound verb) is made up of two or more verbs or verb phrases that are joined by a conjunction and have the same subject. The diagram has a fork in the baseline at the right (verb) side of the vertical line. part one of compound predicate/verb simple subject conj. part two of compound predicate/verb

  3. Ex. Icicles gleamed but dripped. gleamed Icicles but dripped

  4. If a helping verb is NOT repeated, write it on the baseline between the vertical line and the fork, as in the next example. part one of compound predicate/verb simple subject helping verb conj. part two of compound predicate/verb

  5. Ex: Icicles were gleaming but dripping. gleaming Icicles were but dripping

  6. Write each of the following and then diagram each. • Rex was growling and biting. • Waves rose and fell. • Stop and listen! • She either complains or criticizes. • Elaine paused but continued. • Skiers were slipping and falling.
