BREAST CANCER AWARENESS 25TH MAY 2013 Nigeria
Theme: “Time For Action To End Ignorance About Breast Cancer” • Breast Cancer is a disease caused by abnormal division of cells found in the breast. Cancer kills more people each year than HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis combined. Unfortunately, more than 75% of new Cancer cases and Cancer death will be in the developing world-out of the 10million people a year that is expected to die from Cancer by the year 2020.It is also a fact that more than 70% of Cancers in developing Countries are diagnosed too late for cure. But the good news is that 40% of all Cancer deaths can be prevented. • It is in view of these very important facts that the Launch Out Foundation in conjunction with the Worldview Missions and The Ordained Believer Assembly have commemorate this awareness creation exercise especially to people in all parts of the country. As a the new leading Advocacy group, Launch Out Foundation plan to expand its scope of activities to involve bring awareness about the most common cancers apart from Breast to Prostrate in men, and Cervix in women.
The president of Launch Out Foundation, (Mrs) Mfon Obioma, expressed worry over Nigerian’s placement in the first ten position of cancer prone nation in Africa, which she said was unacceptable. She said “the fact that Nigerian is placed among the first ten in Africa and with the youth now falling prey to the disease makes it a bad news that calls for a concerted action to tackle breast cancer”. She announced the theme “Time For Action To End Ignorance About Breast Cancer”, which highlighted the fact that breast cancer concerns everybody and early detection saves lives. She said although deaths through cancer have surpassed deaths as a result of malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS combined, it has not received the needed maximum attention from policy makers. She identified some barriers mitigating the rapid spread of breast cancer as; lack of awareness, high cost of treatment, lack of access to healthcare centers and lack of spousal support and counseling. Giving a genesis of Launch Out Foundation, she said driven by the need to find solutions to what was a worrying phenomenon, the organization champion the awareness creation among communities, which is timely to prevention and cure. Also Ensuring societal awareness about cancer and Reawaken people’s social consciousness about the plight and requirements of women with breast cancer.
Speakers: Ms. Hélène H. Oord – Chairperson & Founder of Worldview Mission headquarter The Netherlands (http://www.worldviewmission.org) also contributed with a key note from skype live chat addressing the Participant on early detection saves lives. Starting with October being the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time when we celebrate and honor the brave women and their loved ones throughout the world who battle breast cancer. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women around the world, with approximately 1.4 million women being diagnosed and over 450,000 dying from the disease each year. The sad and unfortunate fact is that more than half of these deaths occur in low or middle income countries – countries like Nigeria – where breast cancer generally occurs at a younger age, where cancer awareness is generally very low, and where access to health care is poor. Fortunately, in some of these countries, leaders have emerged to give hope and care to these women; champions who do not believe that where you live should determine whether you live. Launch Out Foundation in conjunction with Worldview Mission and The Ordained Believer Assembly commemorate this all important event with the theme “Time For Action To End Ignorance About Cancer. Promoting breast cancer awareness and early screening is critically important, especially in low-income countries where cases are on the rise and access to quality care remains limited. Low levels of awareness contribute to the fact that approximately 70% of cancer patients in developing countries are diagnosed at very late stages, when treatment options are far less effective.
Culturally sensitive health education programs advocating for early screening, like those led by Worldview Missions are helping to change this trend by getting women diagnosed at early cancer stages. Launch Out Foundation and Worldview Mission has taken an aggressive grassroots approach, engaging women of all ages, to increase awareness and demystify breast cancer in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos. At meetings in community centers and churches, explaining the importance of early detection and the consequences of delaying treatment. Our organization plans to works with schools to inform girls about breast cancer, targeting a demographic that not only improves awareness in the younger generation, but also helps spread knowledge as girls talk to family and friends. Launch Out Foundation is committed to saving lives of women around the world by spotlighting health issues like breast cancer and spearheading global initiatives. One such initiative is the Worldview Mission, dept Netherland’s, El-Roi Diagnotic Centre, Ivie Specialist Hospital, and Tee Concept partnership. In addition to reducing deaths from cervical cancer and creating innovative models for women’s cancer control, Worldview Mission, El-Roi Diagnotic Centre and Ivie Specialist Hospital aims to raise awareness of breast and cervical cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment and reduce stigma so women can demand services in sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America. This May Awareness comes on heels at Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, at Tolani Bakare Street, off Destiny Estate, Abijo, Ibeju – Lekki Lagos with a total numbers of 38 participants.
