The History of the Congregation of St. Joseph The story of a unioning of SEVEN into ONE
Founding Congregations Timeline… • Wheeling 1853 (Carondelet) • Cleveland 1872 (Carondelet) • Tipton 1880 (Cleveland) • Wichita 1888 (Concordia) • Nazareth 1889 (Watertown) • LaGrange 1899 (Concordia) • Medaille 1977 (Bourg/Natchez)
Chronology of Relationship • Late 1990s: Heartland Region Forms • Same Time: Group of 4 (meeting to support Tipton) • Same Time: Visiting Your Relatives
Chronology, cont’d • Tipton asks the Question that belongs to us all… • “How do we best move forward into the future for the sake of the mission? “ • 2000-01: FuturingCommittees begin • to study hopes, needs and desires in each independent congregation. • 2002: Group of 8 meets for first time (7 + Concordia). A leadership and membership person from each congregation called the IntercongregationalFuturing Committee began the long journey toward…?????.
2002-2007… RECONFIGURATION“For the Sake of the Mission” • The Process was: • Organic and inclusive: the primary voice from start to finish was that of the sisters! • All about relationship; sisters and associates in the 7 groups said “They’re just like us!” • Feedback, feedback, feedback was collected from everyone along they way! • We prayed…dreamed…interacted…opened • A NEW “Little Design” was created and revised and embraced by the body!!
A New Congregation is Born! • Between December, 2006 and January, 2007. every sister in 7 Congregations voted on whether or not to create this union. • The response was… YES! • On March 19, 2007, Rome officially approved us.
April, 2007 • 1st Chapter of the New Congregation: • Affirmed the New Design • Elected FIRST leadership team • Created and promulgated the Generous Promises • August 6, 2007: First Leadership Team took office
An Alternative Founding Story • Instead of a few individuals founding a group… • A group of women, facilitated by a few committees, founded a new way of being together “for the sake of the mission”. And it’s working!
Myriads of “Midwives” Among others, these groups facilitated the process of Reconfiguration • IntercongregationalFuturing Committee • Local Futuring Committees • Extended Leadership Teams • Design Team • Design Implementation Team • Prayer and Transformation Committee • Chapter Planning Team
