  1. Supporting Guided Practice & Independent Application Collections Breakdown Collection Exams Collections textbook includes six theme-based collections with each including a variety of text selections within various genres. We will read anchor texts together and practice reading skills as a group under direct teacher instruction (I DO), then students will work in small groups to complete close reading in their workbooks for additional practice (WE DO), before completely independent performance tasks to asses for skill mastery (YOU DO). After reading all of the selections within each collection, students will complete a Collection Exam. This exam assesses reading, writing, and language skills acquired over the course of each selection (see pacing guides). It will include reading passages from both literature and informational texts accompanied by both multiple choice questions and short answer responses. Selection Tests After every selection, students take a comprehension exam. It includes 10 multiple choice questions and two short answer responses. They will also be quizzed on their critical and academic vocabulary for each selection. The thought process is to allow students the opportunity to study a little at a time for the large collection exam while providing multiple opportunities to earn a mastery score (80%) in the gradebook. Prior to the selection test, I will extend and reteach reading strategies. Students will also watch skill specific tutorials and complete mini practice and apply skill sessions as a large group review in preparation for the selection test. Close Readers After every selection, students take a comprehension exam. It includes 10 multiple choice questions and two short answer responses. They will also be quizzed on their critical and academic vocabulary for each selection. The thought process is to allow students the opportunity to study a little at a time for the large collection exam while providing multiple opportunities to earn a mastery score (80%) in the gradebook. Performance Tasks Students will complete small performance tasks after each selection to practice skills learned. At the end of each collection, students be given task specific prompts as well as assessment rubrics. Teachers will provide revising and editing notes and students will rewrite to create a polished, finished copy to submit for final collection grade.
