What Did You Learn That Was Useful? • Bias • When you hear about studies in the news, will you be more critical? • Designs • The limits of scientific knowledge -> what do different methods get you? • Causation • What does it mean when we say something causes something else?
What Did You Learn That Was Useful? • Appraisal • When you read articles, can you now tell if it’s good or crap? • The nature of knowledge • How did people get what they know? Is it rational? • Data • Many questions about public health still linger… a lot of it has to do with insufficient or inadequate data
What Did You Learn That Was Useful? • Logic • From your posters: your methods can only answer the question that you ask, and no more • Decision making • How do health policy makers or clinicians make important decisions? • Evidence • What is it? Are you shocked to know that the world is not evidence based?
What Did You Learn That Was Useful? • Epidemiology is a paradigm • What does this mean?
The Future of Epidemiology • Molecular • Genetics • Coordination with other sciences • Sociology? • Psychology? • Political science? • Archaeology?
Your Future • You don’t have to be an epidemiologist • You don’t have to love epidemiology • But you must embrace the central tenets of epidemiology: truth and logic
