AIAA HSABP TC NEWSLETTER No. 1, Issue 1 – January 2012 Message from the Chair Joaquin Castro AIAA High Speed Air Breathing Propulsion Technical Committee Dear AIAA HSABPTC Members, As we welcome the new 2012 year is hard to believe that our HSABP TC will reach its fourth birthday in May, and that once again we are all coming together at ASM, this time in Nashville Tennessee in the second week of January. I never thought that five years after I joined the AIAA Air Breathing Propulsion Organizational Evolution Working Group (ABP OEWG), aiming to see how we could expand the role of Air Breathing Propulsion within AIAA, that I would chair our High Speed Air Breathing Propulsion Technical Committee (HSABP TC) for two years. Our ABP OEWG worked long and hard to ensure that evolving the ABP TC into is current configuration of three TCs (Turbines, High Speed, and Integration) was the right thing to do. Today, four years after the inception of the new structure, the evidence bears that we took the right actions. We have three vibrant TCs, each focusing in their technical areas while still working together and leveraging our strengths and membership. As a result of our reorganization, we have almost tripled the number of AIAA members that are actively participating in Air Breathing Propulsion activities. I am proud to have been part of this effort, however the credit should go to the many individuals that worked hard to make this happen; among them I like to recognize our leader Jeff Hamstra the AIAA Director for Air Breathing Propulsion, and Marty Bradley the first chairman of the HSABP TC. Focusing on our TC we have our share of achievements: • We continue to play a key role in the organizing of the ASM and JPC Conferences, working to improve the quality of the papers in our sessions. Once again the credit goes to the TC members that have led these efforts over the years. • Our website and newsletter have evolved into a resource for our membership. Here again, Dora Musielak, our Communication Subcommittee Chair has done a wonderful job leading and carrying the brunt of this effort. • Our membership continues to grow, mature and evolve thanks in no small part to VenkatTangirala our Membership Subcommittee Chair • BaluSekar, the Chair of our Liaison Subcommittee has leveraged our resources leading the initial effort and working with the HyTASP PC to create the Hypersonic Systems and Technologies Award, a new AIAA Award recognizing contributions in the high speed field. In addition to our ongoing efforts with the HyTASP PC we are also working with JANNAF and a number of other AIAA TCs to develop and hold joint sessions. A number of our members are also involved in local AIAA Chapter activities. Continue on page 4

AIAA HSABP TC NEWSLETTER No. 1, Issue 1 – January 2012 Message from the Chair (continued from p. 3) • Under Jinho Lee’s leadership we continue to support the Air Breathing Propulsion Honors and Awards other efforts like the Air Breathing Propulsion Award, the Gordon Oates Award and the Best Paper Awards. • Dan Kirk as the Chair of our Education Subcommittee continues to lead our outreach efforts on STEM and K through 12 and higher education; along with the other Air breathing Propulsion TCs. Our Education Subcommittees have also revitalized the Engine Design Completion by joining forces with IGTI and continued to offer our propulsion short courses as an adjunct to AIAA Conferences. There is a lot to be proud of but there is a lot of work that remains to be done. We have a handful of very active members. Not just the Subcommittee Chairs I mentioned above, there are a few others too. But I would like to see all of our members fully engaged in our activities. I would also like to see our TC become more of a driving force in influencing the future of our technology and making sure that the Air Breathing High Speed Propulsion voice is heard. We must continue to execute and excel in our most important TC activities: Supporting the furthering of our technology and organizing and executing of the Air Breathing High Speed Propulsion sessions of the ASM and JPC Conference as well as work with our sister HyTASP PC in support of the HyTASP Conference. As I complete my tenure as Chair of the HSABP TC, I leave the leadership of our TC in able hands. Ryan Starkey, will assume the Chair role for our TC in May of 2012. Ryan brings a significant amount of AIAA experience and an academic perspective. He is a respected member of our Hypersonic Community, a great advocate of high speed propulsion and flight, and a good leader. However, I won’t be far. I will continue working with you as a member of our TC and help in the Steering Subcommittee.   5. AIAA HSABP TC NEWSLETTER No. 1, Issue 1 – January 2012 News of Interest! Dr. Claudio Bruno, HSABPTC International Member, retired from the University of Rome in November 2011. At the same time, he was invited to join the UTRC team and lead important work in Combustion and Supersonic Combustion. Professor Bruno accepted and is now in East Hartford, CT. Congratulations, Professor Bruno, and Welcome to the States! A special HSABP technical session at JPC 2012! "State-of-the-Art Numerical Modeling of Turbulent Combustion in Hypersonic Flows" We’ve organized a session to explore the current state-of-the-art of the theory and practice of the numerical modeling of turbulent combustion in hypersonic flows. The scope of the session is envisioned to include research with respect to the form of the governing equations chosen to solve, the closure methodologies and models employed, as well as numerical methods utilized to discretize and evolve the governing equations. Special emphasis is sought with respect to flows with strong shocks and finite rate effects. Invited Speakers: J. At this time we make plans and draw a list of resolutions for the months ahead. And while 2011 was difficult for many of us, I'd like to focus on what we can accomplish in the new year with the knowledge that brighter and more productive days are coming our way. • HSABPTC Communication Initiatives for 2012: • Experts Directory - Creating an expertise directory is a key step in the corporate knowledge management process (to enable knowledge seeker to reach the HSABP experts). • Position Paper “HSAB Propulsion: An Assessment of Our National Capability” - To leave a legacy for future TC members, and to compile the state-of-the art for the ABP community at large. • Education Outreach - Prepare materials adequate for K-12 students. Let’s inspire the future propulsion engineers! • Professional Short Courses - Propose new topics and organize new courses. • Special Technical Sessions - Conceive and organize new invited speaker sessions. • I believe that, although high speed air breathing propulsion met some technical challenges in 2011, we'll see advances and growth to ensure the technology we develop will mature and, one day soon, we will finally see vehicles zipping through the blue sky at hypersonic speeds. • Today, I want to wish everyone in the HSABPTC a happy and prosperous New Year!
