Introduction • Most of the organic waste in Germany is collected separately • Original intention: recycling in composting plants • Present-day intention: energy generation + recycling, hence: 1. fermentation, followed by 2. composting, or direct supply for agricultural use
Pilot Project • Separation of an organic fraction from co-mingled household waste as an alternative to separate collection • Trial period 01.01.2009 – 30.06.2010 • Quantity approx. 45,000 tonnes • Offenbach, a town with about 120,000 inhabitants

7. Future Outlook • Biogenic portion • Material > 60, further sorting possible (plastics, RDF...) • The process is suitable: - for obtaining a high recycling quota - for maintaining a nutrient cycle - for contributing to climate protection
