Lots of children • Both sexes • Small schools • Often a large single room • Cramped conditions with no recreational facilities The essential philosophy at this time was DISCIPLINE THE FEW ACTIVITIES THAT DID EXIST WERE DESIGNED TO KEEP ORDER THE CHILDREN WERE DRILLED INTO LEARNING!

Course was designed to instil discipline & obedience Specific exercises Mainly free standing exercises Delivered through command style teaching Children stood in regimented ranks Regimented use of commands Employed former army non-commissioned officers (NCOs) to act as instructors Pretend weapons in the form of staves were also used
Syllabus introduced after the First World War. With that and a major flu-epidemic the country was in pretty poor health! Recreative exercises had been beneficial for the recovery of injured soldiers & this idea was extended to schools Physical activity was seen to be enjoyable as well as having fitness & health benefits The 1919 syllabus was designed to have a therapeuticeffect THERAPEUTIC – exercise having health as well as physical benefits
