Agenda • BEinGRID • DRS overview • DRS business issues • DRS challenges • DRS working BE15 - Data Recovery Service
Wat is BEinGRID • A consortium led by Atos Origin Barcelona of 75 organisations from 17 countries in Europe • Kick-off in June 2006, in Barcelona. • The project has been estimated on more than 20 million € and is subsidised by the European Union for 50% • The aim is developing commercial applications based on GRID technology • 18 business experiments • Results must be stored in a Repository for future reference • Duration of the project is 42 months BE15 - Data Recovery Service
BEinGRID goals • To understand the requirements for Grid use in a commercial environment, involving software vendors, IT integrators, service providers and end-users. • To enable and validate the adoption of Grid technologies by business. • To design and build a Grid toolset repository with components and solutions based on the main Grid software distributions. • To develop and deploy a critical mass of Grid-enabled pilots, embracing a broad spectrum of economic sectors with different needs and requirements in terms of technological Grid challenges. BE15 - Data Recovery Service
The Business Experiments • BE01 - Computational Fluid Dynamics and Computer Aid Design • BE02 - Movie Post-Production Workflow • BE03 - Visualisation and Virtual Reality • BE04 - Financial Portfolio Management • BE05 - Retail Management • BE06 - Groundwater Modelling • BE07 - Earth Observation • BE08 - Integration of Engineering and Business Processes in Metal Forming • BE09 - Distributed Online Gaming • BE10 - Collaborative Environment in the Supply Chain Management for Pharmaceutics • BE11 - Risk Management in Finance • BE12 - Sales Management System • BE13 - Textile Grid Portal • BE14 - New Product & Process Development • BE15 - Data Recovery Service • BE16 - Ship Building • BE17 - Logistics & Distribution Optimisation • BE18 - Seismic Processing and Reservoir Simulation BE15 - Data Recovery Service
BEinGRID DRSWhat is it? BEINGRID Data Backup and Recovery Service (DRS) is a service which provides SME (Small Medium Enterprises) and/or SOHO (Small Office Home Office) with backup and recovery services for business critical data, as part of their business continuity management requirements which is based on grid technology and peer to peer computing BE15 - Data Recovery Service
DRS Overview BE15 - Data Recovery Service
DRS scope Computing DRS Service Type of IT resource sharing Storage IT services Department Cross BU Regional Global cross enterprise Scope of the grid BE15 - Data Recovery Service
DRS USPs • Usability / ease of use • Cost (lower compared to existing) • Speed • Reliability / resilience to disruptions • Trust ? • Community BE15 - Data Recovery Service
DRS SME Target Market • Findings • ICT very important • High diversity in backup and recovery solutions • Currently manual and tiresome process • On average 1-10 GB per SME, max € 20 per month • On-line Providers mainly ASP model, few P-to-P • Trust and Ease of Use more important than Pricing • Reluctance to store other users data, awareness and trust need much attention • Conclusions • SME’s are a difficult target for new technology • Market potential for backup and recovery service is there • Perception of “GRID” by SME’s reluctant • Source: Survey Rabobank among SMEs in Netherlands, dec 06-Jan 07 (n=2500) BE15 - Data Recovery Service
DRS Pricing & Payment Models • Pricing Models • Direct pricing model, combination of: • Prepaid Service & Subscription • Metered usage • Bartering / community (Sharing your own resource via the grid) • Indirect pricing model: • Basic free version & pricing for extra services • Advertising model • Coupling the DRS to existing (bank) products and services • Community model • Payment models • Direct • Pay Now • Pay After (Direct debit) BE15 - Data Recovery Service
Implementation challenges • Technical challenges • Stability, reliability • Security • Performance (large volumes) • Portability (Windows, Mac, Linux) • Business challenges • Providing sufficient trust guarantees • Legal requirements and possibilities for safeguarding privacy of data and responsibilities of partners in a grid environment • Finding the right business model: The appliance of a technology originally developed in the scientific society to a business environment. It is possible that the original concept of sharing resources for free is not transferable to a price-based business concept. • Creating network economies of the service (enough peers) BE15 - Data Recovery Service
BE15 Status • Use Cases defined • Basic design ready • DSR Components defined • High-level security requirements defined • CleverSafe used (slicing and joining software) • Cleversafe is OpenSource • First version (subset of functions) is operational in lab BE15 - Data Recovery Service
