History • 7th iteration: Thresholds & Monitoring in 1999, Canmore Community Monitoring Report in 2001, 2003, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012 • Legacy of the 1995 Growth Management Strategy – monitor key indicators over time • Structure of this edition is based on the Town of Canmore’s 2013-15 Strategic Plan
Format The Report is divided in 5 sections: • Place • Service • Economy • Environment • People
Vision “Canmore is a resilient and vibrant community socially, economically, and environmentally. Its strength is in its resourceful and engaged citizens, who thrive together on the strength of the community’s heritage, long-term commitment to the diversity of its people, and health of the mountain landscape.” -Town of Canmore 2013-2015 Strategic Plan
Process • Measure consistent indicators over time, modify/add indicators when necessary • Collect and update data and observations • Where relevant, trends are compared to other communities, provincial/national averages • Meet with committees of relevant local experts for each section – provide interpretation / recommendations

Trend Descriptors • Key indicators were assigned a descriptor of change or trend since 2008 (or the most recent year) • This reflects past conditions, and is not necessarily predictive of future trends
Sense of Community • 2008: 70% Strong Sense of Community • 2013: 80% Strong Sense of Community

Arts & Culture • New Public Art: Portal XII and Touchstone • Inclusion of space for the Canmore Art Guild at Elevation Place • Three Sisters Gallery at Elevation Place (curated by theCommunity Public Art Committee) • Initiated process for developing Canmore Arts Centre
Land Use Development and Planning Standards • Updated the Land Use Bylaw • Initiated the Bow Valley Trail Area Redevelopment Plan (BVT ARP) • Major land use decisions on the Three Sisters Lands: “In flux”
Responses to Food Need • Hamper distribution increased in 2008/9 and 2009/10
Health Services • Emergency Room visits decreasing: Urgent Care opened in Cochrane • 88% of patients at ER discharged in 4 hours or less • Low rate of use for telephone based HealthLink • Obstetrics now centralized at Canmore Hospital
Community Safety • Violent crimes and property crimes both trending downwards since 2004 • Overall crime rate is lower than Alberta average
Employment Status • 2008-2011: 5.5% drop in ‘employed full-time’ • Regional unemployment rate reached 5.3% in 2010, 3.9% in 2012
Employment Status • High participation rate in the labour force
Temporary Foreign Workers • Rapid increase after 2007 • 385 present in 2011
Employment by Industry • Accommodation & Food (17.1%) increased by 7.1% overall from 2008 to 2011 • Construction (10.2%) dropped by 31.8% from 2008-2011 (381 jobs)
Income and Wages • Mean income: dropped $10,000 from the peak in 2007 to 2010 • Median income: little change
Capital Gains • Not included in ‘total income’
Business Licenses - Resident • Resident Businesses: -3.4% decline since 2008 • Non-resident Businesses: -31.0% since 2008
Building Permits/Housing Starts • Down significantly from the peak in 2006/7
Regional Tourism Visitation • Increased in 2011 – partly from ‘Rubber Tire Traffic’ • DMF & Canmore Business & Tourism: Significant investment into destination marketing
Occupancy Rates • Up from 45% in 2011 to 52% in 2012 • Increased occupancy rates AND increased room capacity
Rental Housing • Modest price increases (~5%) from 2009-2012 • 46% decrease in average availability from 2009-2012
Resale Prices • Overall, an 18% decrease from 2007 to 2012 • Mean single family home: $915,149 to $758,000

Wildlife & Wildlife Corridors • TSMV Planning Process • TSMV Monitoring and EIS • 2012 BCEAG Update • South Canmore and West Palliser study • 11 years of Benchlands data summarized • Regional elk/sheep populations show ‘no trend’ • Highway Mitigations/Crossing structures continue to reduce mortality and facilitate movement
Bear/Human Conflict • 1997 to 2011: 116 black bears and 12 grizzlies translocated or human-caused mortality
Cougar/Human Conflict • Recent years have been higher than long term average. Partly linked with feeding on wildlife carcasses in developed areas
Coyote/Human Conflict • Coyote conflict has dropped substantially from the high in 2007/8. Perhaps in part from the removal of ‘problem’ coyotes from the town. No ‘extreme’ incidents.
Mountain Pine Beetle • Mountain Pine Beetle #s have dropped dramatically since 2008. Intensive survey and control work has been suspended.
Population 2008-2011 • 2.6% increase in permanent population • 7.5% increase in semi-permanent population
Length of Residency and Migration • Increasing proportion of long term residents • Decreasing migration rates and turnover
Age Structure • 55+ is growing • 0-14 stagnant
