  2. How it all happened The epicenter • The epicenter is near the town of Léogâne • Catastrophic magnitude 7.0 Mw • The earthquake occurred at 16:53 local time on Tuesday, 12 January 2010.

  3. SPREADING • The earthquake was felt in: • Cuba(Guantánamo) • Jamaica (Kingston) • Venezuela (Caracas) • Puerto Rico (San Juan) • Dominican Republic (Santo Domingo)

  4. Aftershocks • Within the first 9 hours 32 aftershocks of magnitude 4.2 were recorded • Since 12 January there had been 52 aftershocks measuring 4.5 or greater

  5. Damage Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive estimated that 250,000 residences and 30,000 commercial buildings were severely damaged and needed to be demolished, also many of the houses of the people

  6. More than 1,300 schools and 50 health care facilities were destroyed.

  7. The city graveyard • By 14 January, a thousand bodies had been placed on the streets and pavements.

  9. NOWADAYS • Half of the 10,000,000 cubic metresof debris have been removed, and 20 percent of it has been recycled. • 1.2 billion—going for short-term solutions including tent camps and temporary shelters.

  10. $215 million of the total funds collected for aid had been spent on permanent housing.

  11. TENTCITY • Until this day there are people who are still living in tents. There are many houses that must be built.
