Module 3 By Tina Billman
Mission Statement My mission is to demonstrate technology integration through presentations to staff and students utilizing the technology available, and through requesting new hardware as I learn of it, if it seems to be appropriate to enhance instruction.
Challenges • A lack of equipment. • A fluid student population due to migrants and families that relocate frequently. • An impoverished population whose only access to technology is at school. • Inadequate examples of how the technology can be used.
Challenges continued • Lack of experts or not knowing who to call. • Websites blocked by District. • Lack of technicians on hand to fix glitches.
Skills • The state has listed minimum technology skills that students will need. • They students are all exposed to these through their technology class, but need more exposure to hone their skills. • Students seek out and learn skills that are meaningful to them. (Many are using proxies to access information that the district blocks.)
Recommended Skills Wallace, Steptoe and Miranda name the following essential skills. Students need to: • be able to work through abstract problems, • to work in teams, • to determine the reliability and validity of information, • and to speak a language other than English.
Observations • Students are being exposed to more problem solving opportunities. • Schools are placing an increased emphasis on cooperative learning. • Teachers and librarians are teaching students to determine when to use a database and when to “Google.” • Most of the students in my school do speak a language other than English.
Characteristics • Students who have access to resources are using technology, but mostly for personal use. • Students/teachers no longer seek out information from professionals, but from The Internet. • David Warlick claims that people used to be consumers of information but now use it to produce things. (I disagree.)
Observations • I see teachers integrating technology more each year with students using it more and more for projects. • I don’t think teachers are reluctant, rather they are uninformed. I don’t know of anyone who was using a wiki last year. Following our exposure in this class, several teachers started, and now other members of their teams are also doing it.
Expectations • We can’t expect teachers to integrate the technology TEKS without any training. • Someone, needs to systematically work through the technology TEKS and provide concrete examples of what is meant by them. • Training on cooperative learning needs to expand into cooperative use of technology.
Expectations • Wallis, Steptoe and Miranda hold up dual language schools, Stanford International, and IB schools as examples of where America’s schools should be headed.
