QuarkNet Grid Project SC04 Classroom Studies of Cosmic Rays Analyzed Using Grid Techniques
QuarkNet Grid Project SC04 • QuarkNet, currently based at 52 U.S. university and laboratory centers with the involvement of over 50,000 high school teachers and students, supports construction of classroom cosmic ray detectors and research-style study of the collected data. Data analysis techniques have been extended using grid computing to apply transforms, store, analyze and publish results. • Working together with scientists and their teachers, high school students can investigate data from a cosmic ray detector array using grid techniques for data storage and analysis and post results for feedback from peers. Possible student investigations include: • Muon Lifetime • Diurnal changes in flux • Effects of shielding • High-energy showers • Altitude effects • This first project marrying existing Virtual Data technology and data collection in the classroom, models the potential of grids to transform education by providing students expanded access to computing power and scientific data.
