How to Study for Finals YOUR GUIDE FOR ENDING THE SEMESTER
When are Finals? • [Update]
Budget your Time • DO NOT cram the night before • Divide the material into several sections a night • Reward yourself as you study
Identify how to Study • Short Term Studying: info will not stay in your brain after the test • Long Term Studying: the info will stay with you
Finding a Technique that Works for Me • FLASHCARDS: write words on one side, definitions on the other • MASTER SHEET: review your notes and condense material into 1 study sheet • MNEMONICS: for lists or orders, develop a mnemonic to remember NOTE: This usually only works for short-term learning
Finding a Technique that Works for Me • PRACTICE TEST: Imagine what questions the teacher might ask. Try to answer it in the test format • RE-READ: Reread SELECT portions of your text. Especially look over chapter summaries at the end. If you can answer the review questions in your text books, you should be OK!
Finding a Technique that Works for Me • ONLY STUDY WHAT YOU NEED TO: Don’t waste your time reviewing what you already know… Identify what you got wrong on worksheets or quizzes. Review so you won’t repeat the same mistakes!
Study Groups • Invite several friends over; agree to keep conversations focused on academics! • Divide the material and review together • Set a reward for yourself after you meet the study goal
Know the Format • Ask the teacher the format (true/false, essay, multiple choice, etc.) • Know what sections are worth the most points • Ask what materials should be reviewed
Silly Stuff, but it Helps! • Get a good night’s rest • Follow the morning routine that works for you. (Don’t drink coffee if you don’t normally! Don’t eat a huge breakfast if you normally don’t eat much for breakfast.) • Dress well—if you look good, you’ll perform good! • Arrive on time • Go to the bathroom before hand: teachers will be stationed in the halls during finals, and you cannot leave during testing
