  1. Analyzing and Creating a Mood Introduction to “Value of Life” Essay

  2. Looking Over Your Poem • Take out the poem you annotated for homework • Look over the literary devices and determine what mood the devices create.

  3. Questions • Answer the following questions on the back of your poem: • How would you describe the tone or attitude of the poem? • What words or phrases help to create this tone? Explain how they do so. • Choose one literary device (besides imagery) and discuss why the author would include the device in the poem.

  4. Notice how authors use these devices to create the mood and develop imagery. • Now it’s your turn to use the techniques the authors use in their poetry! • These same techniques are also considered “narrative techniques” and authors use them to develop their text too.

  6. Practice Prompts • With the following images, write a story that goes along with them using narrative techniques to create a mood.

  7. Tell Your Story… • Brainstorm your beliefs and values.

  8. Most of us have been in a situation where we made a promise that for one reason or another were unable to keep. • When were you disappointed because someone made you a promise that they failed to keep? Or when did you break a promise that you made to someone else? How did this affect your life?

  9. All of us are works in progress with a long wayto go before we reach our full potential. • In what skill or area are you still working to make progress? Why is this skill so important for you to accomplish? How will it benefit your future and/or impact the world?

  10. Our society uses the word hero in manydifferent ways? • How do you define hero, and who is a hero in your life? What impact have they made on you?

  11. We all tend to judge people by their appearances, even though looks can be deceiving. • Have you ever prejudged someone incorrectly based on their appearance or has someone ever prejudged you unfairly based on how you look? What did you learn from this?

  12. Everyone has problems or challenges to overcome. • What obstacles are you proud to have faced and conquered? How has your ability to conquer these obstacles impacted future hurdles?

  13. There is a famous adage: "To err is human, toforgive divine.” • When did you feel divine because you were able to forgive someone for their mistake? When did someone act divine by forgiving you when you were wrong?

  14. Homework • Using these brainstorming questions and glancing at the website, develop a firm idea or ideas of what you want to write about for your essay. • Bring in a list of ideas written on a piece of paper (I will check this off next class). • Be ready to start writing next class.
