  3. A Highly Populated Continent • South Africa is the 5th most populated country out of the 58 countries in all of Africa 1 billion people = 15% of the world population

  6. Transportation in Cape Town • Buses: Golden Arrow Bus Services • Operates scheduled bus services throughout the Cape town metropolitan area • Two Types of Taxis: • Minibus Taxis • Metered Taxis

  7. Golden Arrow Bus Service • April 2012: 4-week long bus strike • Left commuters across the country stranded for weeks • Parties agreed to a 9.5% across the board wage increase • How long until the next bus strike?

  8. Minibus Taxis • Used by majority of population who cannot afford private vehicles (over 60%) • Often poorly maintained • Not road-worthy • Make frequent unscheduled stops causing accidents • Often filled over legal passenger allowance causing high casualty rates when involved in accidents

  9. Metered Taxis • About 1,000 in Cape Town • Not allowed to drive around city to solicit fares • Must be called to a specific location • Mostly used by tourists • Safer than minibus taxis • Rates vary from R8 to about R15 per kilometer

  29. Public Bike System Company • Created the 1st large-scale solar-power bike share system in the world in 2008 • Located in Montreal • 3,000 bike system • Expanded to 5,000 bikes since 2008 • Named the 19th Best Invention of 2008 by Time Magazine
