  1. The Desktop and the Tablet: Which is the Leading Computer? By: Connor Levenhagen CIT 357 Ms. Litka

  2. Intro • Which would rather use? • A desktop? • A tablet? • What would you use them for? • Would they work for your purposes? • Would you be able to afford them? • Would either of them last?

  3. Desktop Computer Keyboard and mouse for input Monitor for output Computer holds rest of hardware All-in-one (Holds all hardware in monitor)

  4. Tablet • Hardware within monitor • Touchscreen for input and output • Processor is main software • Portable • Customizable

  5. History of desktop (Alto) • Alto by Xerox Parc had graphical user interface, bit-mapped high resolution screen, large and external memory storage, mouse, specifically designed software • Had a high price, sold in 1981

  6. History of Desktop (Altair 8800 and competitors) • Sold in 1974-75 • Input with toggle switches, output by LEDs • Followed by Imsai 8080 by IMS Associates, used same bus structure • M6800 Computer kit from SouthWest Technical Products Company sold better • Price and cheap peripheral kits

  7. History of Desktop (Apple Products) • Apple II had color graphics, extensive software, and cheap floppy disks • Macintosh also successful • Apple Lisa failed due to programs that were too complex and too pricey

  8. History of Desktop (Gaming Desktops) • Atari 400 and 800 failed due to being designed specifically for games • Commodore 64 could be a gaming system and a business system • Became best-selling personal computer of all time

  9. History of Desktop (Standardization) • MS-DOS from Micro-Soft • Used by IBM PC in 1981 • Mac OS developed by Apple • Worked to use icons and graphic displays

  10. History of Tablet (Dynabook) • Concept by Alan Kay • Would connect wirelessly to centralized information storages, would learn from info • Size of notepad, with hardware keyboard at the bottom and screen at top • Touch-sensitive, could move with user

  11. History of Tablets (Early tablets) • RAND tablet and Digital Graphic 15 used a stylus and restricted to wired connections • Apple Graphics Tablet in 1979 was more portable and cheaper, used wired stylus pen to transfer info to computer • GRiDPAD ran MS-DOS, cost 3000 dollars

  12. History of Tablets (Later tablets) • GRiD created Tandy Zoomer, was smaller, considered a Personal Digital Assistant along with the Apple Newton MessagePad • Tablets still failed due to high prices, challenge of getting the stylus to work, and in the PepperPad’s case lack of power

  13. History of Tablets (Success) • Amazon Kindle in 2007 ran similar OS to desktops • Apple iPad released in 2010 • Samsung Galaxy Tab • Motorola Xoom • Cheaper, faster, efficient and customizable

  14. Comparing Histories • Price, Purpose, and Standardization • Desktop and Tablet both sold well once affordable • Customization helped both become marketable, but tablets are used by one person, desktops by a family • Standardization helps desktops more with applications, but tablets are becoming more standardized

  15. Comparing Desktop and Tablet • Flash is not on all tablets, but some web sites run faster on tablets • Many find keyboards easier to touchscreens due to familiarity • Processing is faster on desktop • Desktop applications are usually backwards-compatible, but efficiency is not always consistent • Battery life for tablets • Tablets are more customizable

  16. Can They Work Together? • Dockable tablet • Desktop virtualization • Separate OSs (Windows 8)

  17. Future • Cloud Computing • What happens to the desktop when the tablet can get power from the Cloud? • Problems?

  18. Conclusion (What should the consumer do) • The tablet is dominant, but the desktop for now will exist as a backup/alternative • How much is the consumer willing to pay? • What software? • How to connect? • Who will use it? • Is a printer required? • Size? • Will something replace both of them?
