  3. Why engage with standardisation? • Standards are a form of industry self-regulation • Policy makers envisage a growing role for standards alongside regulation • Standards may be referenced in legislation and compliance with them compulsory – e.g. Eco-design Directive for energy-related products • Standards can shape industry practice and performance in the absence of existing regulation

  4. How does the UK SNS work? • Monitoring the BSI work programme • Identifying technical committees covering aspects of environmental and social sustainability • Identifying UK organisations active in these areas to mobilise their expertise • Coordinate the work of experts to participate in BSI technical committees • Enlist the expertise of a wider network to ensure representation of a range of views and to support UK SNS experts • Support initiatives to improve access for societal stakeholders to standards development • Participate in ad-hoc projects by standards bodies, e.g. CEN SABE Resource Efficiency project

  5. What’s happened in the past year? (1) • Developed close links with BSI and improved exchange of information • Refined approach to work programme development and selection of work items • Recruiting experts for a number of technical committees • Nanotechnology and materials • Electric vehicles and biofuels • Waste electrical and electronic equipment • Energy-using products • Biodiversity management • Energy performance of buildings • Air, soil and water quality • Energy management

  6. What’s happened in the past year? (2) • Participating in a number of BSI committees (e.g. Electro-technical environment committee) • Working with ECOS to coordinate activities and increase our impact • Representing ECOS on ‘Societal stakeholder toolbox’ and Resource efficiency roadmap projects by the European standardisation institutes (CEN-CENELEC) • Raise awareness and outreach of the UK SNS through: • Annual event • Newsletter • Face to face meetings • Social media • Fundraising to secure the future of the initiative
