  5. Five year trend line This decline over five year is, in part, due to the addition of 32 new countries in the 2012 Prosperity Index. In this instance, 3 of these new countries placed above Ukraine.

  7. The European Union The European Union (EU) is an economic and political union of 28 member states that are located primarily in Europe. The EU operates through a system of supranational independent institutions and intergovernmental negotiated decisions by the member states.
