Your memory & How it Works Memory is not a thing, it is a process. It can get better or worse depending on use. Prefrontal Cortex Short term or working memory “Prior Knowledge” Hippocampus Long term memory Takes 7 repetitions to get from short to long term memory Information is there forever, strong emotion, easier to remember. “Emotional Value” Lymbic System Everything passes through it and is given emotional value- fight or flight.
Left & right“brained” Logic Emotional Math Music Writing Reading Artistic- Drawing Kinesthetic- Athletics “Bossy & Arrogant” “Stupid & Lazy”
Left and right“brained” Logic Emotional Math Musical Instrument Writing Reading Artistic- Drawing Kinesthetic- Athletics Very organized Quiet- introverted On time Fold Exploding backpack Talkers Chronically late Wad Left brain skills can be measured (IQ) and are tested on standardized tests (TAKS, etc.). Right “brained” people have to develop these skills. IT TAKES EFFORT!
Howard Gardner named 7 types of Multiple intelligence Logic Emotional 1-5 are in a part of brain that is easily influenced by environment (parents, friends, etc.) 1. Math 2. Linguistic 3. Musical 5. Spatial 4. Kinesthetic 5. Spatial Almost = in both halves Your Emotional IQ - Limbic system 6. Inter-personal 7. Intra-personal These are hardest to influence, but, once developed, never disappear.
Intelligence- number of nerve pathways and how efficient they are. Left vs. right Interactive passive • Activities that develop left brain intelligence: • Math • Reading • Writing • Playing an instrument • Listening • Stand-up comedy • Internet research • Games- chess, poker, bridge • Activities that • “retard” the brain: • TV • Video games • Texting/IM Nerve pathways can be developed for right brain intelligence. It takes time, work, and repetition, repetition, repetition….. There is usually a lot of FRUSTRATION involved. This is what you are committing to in a Pre-AP class!!! When an activity is Interactive, learning taking place, the synapses (nerve pathways) light up the scan- left brain. This has been documented with brain scans. When an activity is Passive the lights dim, no learning taking place- right brain.
