  3. Internal and ExternalCommunicationDefinition of International communication

  4. Internal and ExternalCommunicationDefinition of International communication Is it really so simple? What does “International Communication” really mean for a University?

  5. Internal and External CommunicationDefinition of International communication Networking: with othernationalinternationaluniversities and institutions (ex. Networks, Consortia) Internationalization: new research and teachingstrategies in order to become more and more competitive on an internationallevel New informative contents: not just translatingcontents in English or otherlanguagesbutalsomodifyingthemaccording to the needs of the finalbenificiary

  6. Internal and ExternalCommunicationDefinition of International communication Promotionalmaterial: used to attractmainly new students from allaround the world

  7. Internal and ExternalCommunicationDefinition of International communication … and muchmuch more … Local cooperation: getting a complete knowledge of all the local ‘aspects’ thatcouldimprovepositivily an internationalactivity from a social, cultural or economicalpoint of view (i.e. events, services, labour market, industry)

  8. Internal and ExternalCommunicationDefinition of International communication And whichis the point of view of the participants? …

  9. Internal and ExternalCommunicationHow doesitdevelopwithin a University Normallythere are severalofficesdealing with internationalactivities. Just a fewexamples: • International mobility office • International research office • Students and Phdcareers office • International affairs • Language centre

  10. Internal and ExternalCommunicationHow doesitdevelopwithin a University A wellorganizeduniversityhas a departmentincludingallthisoffices in ONE mainsharedstructure, howeverit’s more likely to see the following situation:

  11. Internal and ExternalCommunicationHow doesitdevelopwithin a University Unfortunatelyworkingseperatelytakes to a lack of communication and most of the timesitalso: • Slows down administrative procedures • Increases the risk of missing important deadlines • Doesn’t allow staff to be updated and informed • Gives an idea of bad administration Weallknowthatthingswillkeep «working», but a strongercooperationbetweenofficeswouldsurelymakeiteasier for all of us… and I’mnotonlyreferring to internationalactivities.

  12. Internal and ExternalCommunicationHow doesitdevelopwithin a University Within the universityitoccursoften to be involved in internationalactivities, for exampledealing with International students, paying an invoice of a foreign company, hosting staff from allaround the world (i.e. Erasmus STA). Whathappensmost of the timesisthatthispeople or activities are redirected to an «international» office. Shoulditreally work in this way? Most of the timesitwouldn’teven be necessary to involve otherofficesifthereis a goodcommunication and information strategy.

  13. Internal and ExternalCommunicationHow doesitdevelopwithin a University Probablyproblemswould be easilysolved with a really common tool, extremelyusefulbutnotalwaysefficientlyused: There a no specificstudies or analyses on thismatterbutI’mquitesurethatatleast a third of the requestsforwarded/redirected to anyinternational office could be dealed by otheroffices.

  14. Internal and ExternalCommunicationWhich are the most common ‘tools’ used Universities in the last decade havesurelygivenpriority to ICT allowingto anyuser in any part of the world to have immediate access to information. • Social networks • Internet webpages • Newsletters • Web platforms • Webinars or web conferences

  15. INTERNATIONAL JOINT PROJECTS • BILATERAL • AGREEMENTS • NETWORKS Internal and ExternalCommunicationWhich are the most common ‘tools’ used

  16. Internal and ExternalCommunicationHow to improveinternationalcommunicationskills

  17. Internal and ExternalCommunicationHow to improveinternationalcommunicationskills • An idea could be to organize, in cooperation with a group of internationalUniversities, a series of Staff training weeks.
